Post subject: My beginner workout routine good?
Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

I started lifting weights about a month ago, and I have asked for
advice from my friends and I wanted to know if what I am doing is
correct.

A typical week at the gym looks like this: (a rep about equal to 10
tries)

Monday: 10 min run to warm up,
3 reps on rows,
3 reps on seated rows,
3 reps seated pulley pull down,
3 reps bicep curl machine,
and 4 reps on regular dumbell curl.

Tuesday: 10 min run to warm up,
3 reps bench press machine,
3 reps chest butterfly machine,
3 reps tricep extension machine,
3 rep standing rope pull down,
3 rep military press machine,
and another 3 reps on some other shoulder exercise.

Wednesday I take off and on thursday and friday I do the same on monday
and tuesday.

First off, let me say that I know I should incorporate some leg
exercises into my routine, so I will have to do that.

Other then that though does my routine sound good and should I continue
doing this? Any other exercies that I should be doing instead?

Also I am about 150 lbs, and 5'6. So I"m not real big so I'm trying to
eat a bit more, then I have before as well as trying to eat more
protein. Should I get some protein shake mix as well?

Any comments or questions to help me out would be helpful thank you.

There is nothing magical about a protein shake. It's just a convenient way to
get protein. It's not needed if you're getting adequate protein from your
diet...approx. 1 gram per pound of bodyweight.

When you say "rep" you mean "set".

You are doing 3 sets of 10 reps.

Check out these beginner routines.
http://www.stumptuous.com/program.html
While you are there read EVERYTHING else on the site.

Include squats!

I've met Krista - cute as a button. Voluptuous - no. OTOH, her husband
won't have to worry about her boobs hanging down to her waist by the
time she is 40.

To my way of thinking - Krista is just about like the little bears
porridge. Just right...

Actually, a rep is a repetition, one iteration of an exercise. A set is about
10 (for example) reps.

If you hadn't said you ran a mile to warm up, I'd've assumed you didn't have
legs, tut.

You might consider using a barbell instead of machines.

Drop the single-joint exercises. Squat. Do a full-body routine 2-3 times a
week. Use a barbell instead of machines. Do one hard set instead of 3-4. Read
something useful, e.g. www.stumptuous.com/weights
