Hi,

I've been training for a 30-mile 1-day walk involving 10,000 ft of ascent.
It's in 2 weeks time. I've done quite a lot of training for it (a week ago I
did what I would estimate to be about 80% of the walk in terms of distance
and ascent). I'm told that I will find the walk much easier if I now stop
almost all training i.e. a flat, 30-minute walk each morning is about all I
should be doing - no long or hilly walks.

Can anyone comment on this advice, please?

two weeks is too long. A few days is about right, in my opinion.

I don't know about a long walk such as that, but when I was training for
10-mile races, the standard advice was that the week before the race was
used for "taper down", with the daily work-outs gradually decreasing in
intensity and then nothing significant for 2 days before the event. 2
weeks seems lot a long time to be doing nothing but a 30-minute morning
walk. Maybe whoever gave you the advice meant that you should start
tapering down now in order to eventually reduce it to that.

Thanks guys,

The replies I've had here and in uk.rec.walking and the Web pages I've found
all pretty much concur. The thing to do is taper down rather than stop
training. So I'll do no more long hilly walks in the remaining fortnight,
but I will be using the stepping machine in the gym, gradually reducing the
amount I'm doing there.

Thanks again,

Graham

That would be an afternoon strool for a lot of the people in uk.rec.walking.

They do more for fun(recreation) than most of do for fitness.
