A good way to do this is to start at the top, lower yourself down as slowly
as possible, stopping at various points. This involves a lot of
neuro-muscular conditioning.
And whilst at the top, do very shallow chinups (small range of motion),
letting the range of motion get progressively large over the weeks.

I didn't say he didn't know anything, just that his opinion of his own
knowledge isn't representative of reality. He knows plenty (and there
are plenty of things he already does better than I do), but one doesn't
trust a 14-year-old's opinion of his ability to lift safely and
effectively without evidence and, for that matter, one doesn't trust an
adult's opinion on the same subject without evidence, either. I've
watched my 14-year-old lift - it's impressive, but it's not always safe.
Most middle-aged adults I've seen err on the side of lifting too little
weight to be effective, while most young men I've seen err of the side
of trying to lift too much or use poor, often dangerous form to complete
a lift they probably shouldn't have even started.

That's my son's complaint also, but it's not true.
Some parents think it's their responsibility to take good care of their beloved
child in spite of his wants, and his wish to be independent. Protect him from
himself, so to speak. That includes doing some research on stuff the kid wants
that the parent has no clue about.

Omigod, I insulted him. Apparently he's in a growth spurt. I forwarded him
these posts and he informed me he weighs 115! I swear it was only a month or so
ago he told me 90.

So give me a link to the archive because I don't know how to find it and I'm
tired and don't feel like thinking hard.

And, I could get an affordable membership at a gym through my daughter's
boyfriend, don't know if they'd accept teenagers. Plus it's a drive and I doubt
he would go WITH me, mothers can be so embarrassing, you know. I don't think he
minds me too much though, so I'll ask. Then we could both learn the proper way
to do things. And I won't buy him any machines. No room in the garage.

That's what I worry about. The boys used the weights in P.E. for awhile, now
they work out at each other's houses, most likely without supervision, and it
worries me. So I got the home gym, now need to learn something myself so I know
he's doing it right.

I don't believe it. In Las Vegas, female "Naked Warriors" are naked!

I took a weight-training class in college years ago. It was all about using
machines and gawking guys. I enjoyed the workouts, but don't remember much
about the proper way to do things and still don't enjoy being gawked at,
especially when I look in the mirror with fading memories of my teen-age
perfection. So I haven't gone to the gym.

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look at it.

Nellis Air Force Base, the largest fighter base outside of Russia, home
of the Air Force Thunderbirds...yeah, it's in or nearby Las Vegas.

Our airmen are naked female warriors, too.

If you read her myspace thing, she's actually stationed on an Air Force
Base that I assume is in or nearby Las Vegas. This is actually the
first time I've been on a myspace.com page - the whole thing seems oddly
overly personal to me, but then again, a bit of quick math finds that
I'm twice her age, so I guess being behind the times on some of these
things is OK. Smile

the same stuff.
