"Insists"? "Key"? For such an insistent opinionated person, your
friend seems terribly uninformed.
First, no one "must" buy and own anything if a gym is conveniently
located. It is nice to "buy and own" equipment if you like the
convenience of exercising at home.
(And of course, some excellent forms of exercise do not require any
equipment at all.)
Second, a stationary exercise bike (of any form) is no better nor worse
necessarily than a mobile (regular) bike. Moreover, a recumbent bike
is no better nor worse necessarily than an upright (regular) bike. The
operative word is "necessarily". There are pros and cons for either
and both pieces of equipment depending on circumstances.
Finally, no single exercise nor exercise equipment is uniquely "key" to
obtaining your exercise goals, be they weight loss, strength or
fitness. The operative word is "uniquely". There are pros and cons
for each mode of exercise depending on circumstances and specific
goals. Usually, multiple modes of exercise work in concert with each
other.
Gym v. at-home equipment v. outdoor activity? One exercise v. multiple
modes of exercise? This exercise v. that exercise? This time or that
time (or times) of day? The only thing that is "key" to making those
choices is: opt for choices that you will continue to do several times
a week for the rest of your life. The operative word is "you". What
works best for your friend may or may not be what works best for you.
And by the way, your choices will undoubtedly vary throughout your
life.
The only things that are "keys" to success in this area are: make
exercise a priority; and make an appointment with yourself, if
necessary, to exercise regularly.
