I do this about once every 8 days or so...
i do it basically to be more efficient with my gym time, so that i
don't have to go into the weightroom as often. Do any of you do this?
How bad do you think it affects the average person's gains?
Personally, I don't think it's affecting me that much, and I have
gained on the bench since beginning to do this. I don't do a whole lot
of sets really...
I do basically a warmup set of 135 on the bench ..10 reps or so
then i jump up to 180 and do that about 4 times
then i go down to 175 and do that about 5 times
then 160 about 8 times
done on bench
then i go to squat...do 135 however many times i feel like...no more
than 6 or 7 but just because i get bored really
then i go up to 185...do that maybe 5 reps
then to 225... do that maybe 3 or 4 times...
then maybe i'll do a couple of clean and jerks with 140 to 145 or so...
so that's what I do about every 8 to 9 days or so...
I'm 25, 150 lbs...about 5'7..
I remember distinctly barely being able to bench press 135 lbs just
once about 4 years ago when I started lifting weights. Ahh..the newbie
gains...but I guess that's why I like benching so much because I know
how far I've come, even though I realize many others have made MUCH
more gains than I have in 4 years. >> Stay informed about: i actually squat and bench press on the same days |

All I have to say is I hope you have good genetics b/c it seems like
perhaps you could be looking at overtraining...but maybe not depending
on your reps, sets, etc... how heavy/intense are you going on these
days? >> Stay informed about: i actually squat and bench press on the same days |

I know guys who squat, bench and deadlift on the same day and they do
it 3 times per week. One of them is about 30 and competes at 181 and
is about your height. He squats 575, benches 425 and deadlifts 630
and he's drug free. >> Stay informed about: i actually squat and bench press on the same days |

Squats: medium (M), low(W), high intensity(F) schedule
Bench, Bar rows: high(M)/low(F) schedule
Deads and btn press: linear increase on wednesdays, either reps or
weight. >> Stay informed about: i actually squat and bench press on the same days |

Well, I was getting gains for a while in the beginning, but I continued
at that beginning intensity for way too long and basically
overtrained...but like I said it only SOUNDS like he might be
overtraining...but probably not if he's been doing it for years.

Why do you say this? Do you know anything about overtraining? If he IS
overtrained would he still be getting gains?

I resemble that remark. S
CliffsNotes: That's what I'd call a play on words, Andrzej. There's a
common retort, "I resent that remark," which indicates dissatisfaction
with what someone has said - typically an unjust or false accusation,
however the switch to the word resemble serves as an indication of
admission to the accusation while, yes, also indicating, perhaps,
unwarranted simultaneous resentment.
(cough)
Seriously, I think the definition of easy, average, and hard gainer are
relative and highly variable dependent on a person's perspective,
goals, expectations, and experience.

And in the spirit of the misc. portion of misc.fitness.weights:
Had any of the bikes out recently? An unseasonably warm weather spell
has covered most of the Central and Eastern states thanks to an
agreeable jet stream. And due to that, my motorcycle has seen more than
a few miles recently. I suspect snow will fall in July.

Maybe you overtrained or maybe you just overreached, which is fine.
For what it's worth, I do dips and chins three times a week. I go for
plenty of low rep sets, up to 10x3. Recently I'm able to reach failure
on many sets, and I'm not overtraining (I'm adjusting my technique to
change the difficulty of an exercise). I'm your proverbial hardgainer
too; fattest and weakest kid in the classroom, so not just an average
gainer who likes to whine but a real hardgainer.
And you know what? I'm getting thick! And I love it too.
So, you see, recovery is trainable and if you persist on training your
recovery ability it will increase over time. The trick is to back off
a bit when you cross the line, but this is learnable, and if you
persist on learning you'll learn.
