Hello everyone

I've been working out for about 10 weeks doing a 3 day split.
Here is my workout:
M - Chest and Back
W - Legs
F - Arms and Shoulders
*each exercise 4 sets of 15 reps

I have two Questions:

1. Should I still be experiencing soreness on the day following my
workout after 10 weeks? It's mostly on the biceps and chest and it goes
away, but returns with each workout. Is this good or bad?

2. Am I working out too hard if I have to stop at the tenth rep of a 15
rep set for 10-20 seconds in order to complete the set and I am
struggling to finish and sweating after each exercise? Should I be
completing each set without stopping? My goal is to get big, but I want
strength and endurance too.

Thanks!
NH

It isn't particularly bad, but IMHO, it shouldn't be happening either. If
I've had a layoff and come back to lifting, I'll be sore after the first
workout of a particular muscle group, but only after the first one;
subsequent workouts don't make me sore (usually).

I suspect you are doing too many reps...further evidence: your next
question.

Yes. If you have to rest mid-set, your weight is too high. It's not really
a set. Your working weight should be that at which you can just finish
doing the entire set - struggling and sweating is fine. Either drop the
weight or drop the reps. If you hunted you could find lots and lots and
lots of threads doing lower rep sets. You don't need biceps endurance
(unless you are a professional speed quaffer or something), so high reps
there won't do you much good. My recommendation, do lower rep sets with a
higher weight. Get magnetic plates if you want to make smaller step jumps
in your weight increases.

I would want to know how many sets in total you do a day, how long it
takes you, and at what frequency you do a certain body part. I have
heard it said that one should not exceed more than 22 sets a day total
(i.e., if you are doing e.g. 7 different exercises, you should do no
more than 3 sets each to a total of 21 sets); and that the workout
should not last more than around an hour and a quarter. In addition, if
I exercise a body part less frequently than every 6 days, I will feel
pain in the area. 6 days is the limit, at least for myself. More than
6-7 days, I lower the weights 10%. And of course no exercising the same
body area day after day. Are you doing a warm-up? You can either do a
general body warm-up (treadmill etc.) and/or a specific one, i.e. do a
first set at lower weights. Good luck.

I think if you're only doing chest once per week, this is why soreness is
happening. Also 4 tough sets of 15 reps is a bit excessive. I would
recommend 4 sets or more only when in the low rep range (less than 5 or 6
reps), although individual tolerances vary.

Staying at 15 reps is not a recipe for long term size and strength gains.

Although stretching is good, it will not warm you up, and some advise
that stretching is best done AFTER a work-out.

* Try a warm-up. Not warming up can be causing the pain.

* You are working out 6 days a week, but working each body part only
every 7 days. This could be the cause of pain. You may want to try
working each body part twice a week. Here's an example:

Monday and Thursday- chest and back
Tuesday and Friday- legs
Wednesday and Saturday- shoulders and arms

* As for the cardio, you could do 20 minutes everyday before the
workout. That could also serve as your warm-up. 20 minutes a day times
6 days is still 2 hours a week.

* I fully agree with others who have written that 15 reps aren't going
to get you bigger. If you can do 15 reps, then you should increase the
weights (gradually!), so that you can't possibly do more than 10-12
reps. Then you'll get bigger. You should also do your reps SLOWLY. If
you are rushing, it's not going to get you bigger.

* You may want to have a one time session with a trainer. A trainer may
correct your form (which could be causing pain).

Good luck!

I think it would be a good idea to work each body part 2x per week, but
I don't know if six visits to the gym per week is realistic for me with
my schedule.I know I posted cardio three days per week, but those are
the same days that workouts get canceled when I'm busy. I'm sure I can
commit to four days of working out. Given the workout I posted, would
it be possible to eliminate some exercises so I can do upper body twice
per week and legs twice per week instead?
If this is possible, which exercises should I keep and which can be
elminated?

Thanks

i like what i'm hearing, bob. if i were only training my chest once a
week, i know i would not be hitting it hard enough to encourage
progress past day 4-5 (assuming i could make a considerable need for
additional growth after the 3rd day of rest). unless you're really
shredding your muscle tissue (and who actually *wants* to do that?)
the chest should be allowed a few days to recover (if it needs that)
but maybe at one week, at this point in their life (at least) it would
be better to hit the chest more than that, even if only to give the
body justifiable reason to keep the pushers. i know if i don't eat
enough my body is more than willing to just splpfffffftlslp off
whatever body parts i'm not using aggresively enough to make some
between meal glucose or somethin'...

Four days of lifting a week is fine. With your present 3 day program,
you wouldn't be doing the same routine on a given day of the week
(e.g., Tuesday is legs), but so what. Here's an example: say the days
you commit are Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat.

week 1:
Mon- chest&back, Wed- legs, Fri- shoulders&arms, Sat- chest&back
week 2:
Mon- legs, Wed- shoulders&arms, Fri- chest&back, Sat- legs

and so on. This means you exercise each body part more often than every
7 days.
