Post subject: My sides are itchy, am I getting stretch marks?
Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

I've been exercising to the point of fatigue and eating as much as I
can. Now the skin on my sides, especially skin over the sides of the
chest, covering the ribs, is itchy.

I've read about stretch marks when gaining weight...

http://www.teenbodybuilding.com/mark6.htm
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/stretchmarks.htm

The other possibility could be that my soap is too harsh, as I shower
daily, sometimes twice daily, and recently switched from a gentle body
wash in frustration over its lack of lather, to a classic tar soap that
lathers generously, though probably dries my skin too much. I've also
been scrubbing vigorously with a shower puff. Perhaps my sides itch
because my skin is too dry.

I don't think I have a fungal infection.

Do emerging stretch marks itch? would it be WAY too early for them
(started weight gain plan ~10 days ago, though been keeping fit before
that)? I'm suspecting its probably just the harsh soap and rough
scrubs, but why wouldn't it be so in other areas of my body too?

Yup, I now suspect they are stretch marks.

Just took off my top and had a closer look. I can't clearly inspect the
area on the sides of my chest as it's awkward to do so, and all I can
see are what looks like sore red spots, but closer to my hips I can
clearly see two lines at least on either side that do definitely look
like stretch marks. Not sure if they're recent or old, though I suspect
recent as I never had a history of rapid weight gain and never noticed
them before.

I also suspect the harsh soap and rough scrubs might've contributed to
this, at least in drying the skin significantly that it became less
elastic. I just applied a liberal amount of St Ives intensive body
lotion with vitamins A, C, and E for severely dry skin. I hope it
helps.

Now I have mixed feelings, I wonder if I should go slowly on my weight
gain plan so as to avoid strech marks, as so far I have had the mindset
of eating as much as I can for weeks and months to come.

What do you guys think? Will a generous lotion and gentler cleansing
help me avoid them and I can continue eating without restriction, or
should I not exceed a certain caloric intake per day?

Either ask your doctor or take a few days off from weightlifting and see
if the "itchy" goes away. Overtrained muscles, at least mine, sometimes
manifest themselves as apparent skin discomfort. I know it might sound
strange but, like I said, take a few days off from the "exercising to
the point of fatigue" and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you
have your answer, and since taking a few days off from time to time is a
good idea, anyway, .....

Stretch marks don't only come with weight gain, you say you've been fit all
this time, toned?? Well since your building muscle now, you are more
enclined to stretch marks... Stretch marks are a pain, you can't avoid them,
and they don't dissappear.. I've tried everything!!! I've cut back on my
training, given up for a year, re-trained lightly, applied "stretch mark
removal cream" and still no avail. My advice to you?!!?!? Stretch alot, and
start taking a multi vitamin supplement every day. It'll make you skin more
elastic. You really gotta decide now do you want muscles or stretch marks??
You're lucky you found it early on!!! if I were you I'd really think bout
it... yes the marks fade and go silver after a while but they NEVER
disappear!!!

People say stretch marks look cool, real signs of a real trainer BLAH BLAH
BLAH... If I could go back I would of never lifted a weight!! and avoided
those bloody things

Jonathan.

Yeah I've been pretty toned lately as my exercise emulates rowing
against some resistance, but I had not been eating much and so lost
some weight, hence my decision to stop that fitness exercise and try to
gain mass. What's interesting is that for some reason I had stopped
stretching a while ago, so thanks a lot, a lot for reminding me of
that. I'm definitely gaining muscles; yesterday, for example, I ate
1411 calories in excess of my basic metabolic rate, and my protein
intake was 118 grams (today it was 796 in excess of BMR, and 113grams
of protein, mainly because I ate baked salmon today instead of steamed
eggs yesterday, which is harder to eat too much of as it's (the fish)
somewhat dry and salty; I definitely know that I prefer eggs now). Over
the past 7 days my weight went up by 0.4kg compared to same
circumstance last week.

The lotion seems to help, since after I apply it I don't feel anything,
but then 12 hours later I start feeling the itch and discomfort and
sense that I need to reapply it again. I should take vitamins tablet,
which I did yesterday, apply the moisturising lotion twice a day,
stretch (thank you!), drink a lot of water, use a gentle soap (I hate
gentle soap!)... I don't know what else.

I could perhaps try to gain weight more slowly, but isn't 0.4kg per
week slow enough (and even that is probably hard to sustain)? It'll
take me months to get to my desired weight at 0.4kg per week. I know
that the skin has a growth cycle of 28 days, so that would be 1.6kg per
28 days. Interesting. It doesn't sound like much but maybe for tight
skin over toned and hugry muscles it is. I should say that my body fat
ratio when I last measured it was 9%, and it probably decreased since
then, rather than increased, as I trained more regularly and for
longer.

Hey, update. Whatever it was, it seems applying sunflower oil and
rubbing it in as would do with an oil massage helped. The St Ives
intensive moisturiser with vitamins E, though applied liberally, lasted
only a few hours and then the skin discomfort would return, and would
require reapplication. But I read about the natural sources of vitamin
E and it was said that sunflower oil or corn oil are rich in them,
(http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamine.asp click the question "What
foods provide vitamin E?" and see the table) so yesterday I applied
sunflower oil to my sides and not felt a thing at all, no itch, no
soreness, no discomfort or awareness of my skin, for 24 hours till i
had my next shower. She skin feels a little oily after applying the
oil, depending on how much is applied, but after rubbing it in as would
in a massage it feels less so, and it all seems to be absorbed by the
skin within hours, which makes perfect sense as many medicines are
administered topically. I just did it after a shower now for the second
time. I'm pleased about this, as not only more effective, but it's far
less expensive (tens of times) than the St Ives and other branded
lotions.
