I've recently started walking for exercise on a regular basis and also
started using a pedometer. I'm trying to figure out if I've set up the
step length correctly.
The walk I usually do takes me about 75 minutes and according to
the Google walking map tool I found at about.com, the distance of the
walkis 10.17 kilometers/6.34 miles. My pedometer says I walked 8212
steps totaling 10.49 kilometers/6.52 miles. Since that's a fairly small
difference between the two I think that means the pedometer is
reasonably accurate.
Do you think that's correct? For reference I am 189cm tall, which is
about 6 feet 2 inches tall.
If I had the manual for the pedometer this would be a lot easier but
I can't find it... >> Stay informed about: using a pedometer for the first time |

Most pedometers have a way to program your step size. If you do this,
you can probably get a more accurate milage reading from your meter.
At the same time, you'll ever get it to exactly match google maps.
What you walk is different that the straight line drawn with the map.
Some of your steps will be longer than what you program into your
meter. Many will be shorter.

What model do you have? Many owner's manuals are available on the web.

Hi
Regarding the exact distances. My question would be: does it really matter? Most of us tend to use the same routes over and over again so as long as you know the time taken then you now how well you performed each time. The pedometer is useful in that you can match one route to another and also go to other places that you haven't been before and still compare with your regular outings.
