Pedometers work by counting *your* step. If you don't set it properly by
actually walking a known distance, counting your steps, and doing the math
it will not work accurately if you want it to report milage.

Suggestion:

I just set it on Mile(s) before starting. You can measure a quarter
mile (or mile)with your car
then multiply that by four to get one mile or miles you want to walk.
Then walk that mile noting the measurement on your pedometer and voila!
Just remember to not the beginning and ending of the
pedometer each time you walk.

The one I have can be set to miles, calories, kilometers, etc. I
usually keep it on miles instead
of steps. I have a quarter mile measured and know when I've walked the
distance I want to
walk. After you know the numbers on your pedometer, then you can use
that to walk elsewhere
and still reach your goal of the distance you want to walk.
