I'm 38, 5'7", and presently weigh 240 as of this morning. I was 290
earlier this year and have been steady losing with a combination of
cardio and weights...more cardio than weights at this point.
Question: is a six-pack of abs possible for me? I still have a long
way to go, but I'm doing well and have made some major lifestyle
changes (diabetes is a great motivator!) I always set big goals and
accomplish them...just wondering if getting down to 10-12% bodyfat to
see the abs is too big a goal.
BTW, I am large-framed for my size...a tape measure around my chest on
the outside of my arms is about 25". I haven't had my body-fat
checked in a while...I'm sure it's still a big number at this point.
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Six-pack abs possible? |

I cut from August to November, lifting 3 times a week and doing cardio
5 times per week. How many calories are you taking in per day?

True.

heh I never heard that one before. Also true, obviously. You won't
see your abs if they're covered by a layer of fat.

Agreed 100%. I cut, but made sure that I lost no more than two pounds
per week during the months I was cutting. The one week I lost five
pounds and immediately added some calories to my daily food intake. I
wanted to maintain as much muscle as possible while losing the fat.

Maybe it's a transposition? 52"?

Ditto! And start counting your calories. I realize or expect my count
was ballpark at best, but maintaining a (again, ballpark) 1500 kcals
per day routine along with the aforementioned cardio and weight
training enabled me to drop to 149 lbs. losing at least 5" (closer to
6") off my waistline and my % bodyfat, though unmeasured, was visibly
less than when I began the cut.

Yes, good luck. You can do this. You can have six-pack abs.

Your biggest challenge would probably be in keeping the six-pack.
For a real quest, try for an eight-pack!

Haven't you ever seen that TV show "The Biggest Loser"? These things
can definitely be done, but the real problem is staying in tip-top
condition.
BTW, just as an FYI, I'm also 240 pounds right now and have a four-
pack at somewhere around 20% bodyfat, give or take a little. There
are people who weigh 50 pounds less than me but look a good roly-poly
hundred pounds more! I suspect bodyfat percentage, while a much
better figure than a simple bathroom scale number, could also be
deceptive like that somehow.... >> Stay informed about: Six-pack abs possible? |

Good work, just keep doing what you are doing. At some point in the
future you can switch around the weighs/cardio ratio.

Yes, but not for some time and keep in mind abs are made in the kitchen,

You can achieve your goal but it may take a bit longer than you want.
Slow and steady is the way.

You will need to be under 10% to have good looking abs. 90% of this is
genetic, so without seeing you and how your skin will bounce back, it's next
to impossible to tell if you will ever have good abs. The key is to just
keep training hard and eating well. The results will be worth your time and
effort.

You can do all the wild exercise in the world, but it you don't eat
correctly, you will never look good. Diet plays a FAR bigger role in all of
this.

Sorry, that was retarded. I have no idea what I was typing there. If
you put a tape measure around my upper body at my shoulders, it's
59". That's what I meant by large-framed for my size.
Alas, it's presently 49" at my belly button and I wear a 40" waist. >> Stay informed about: Six-pack abs possible? |

Not exactly true, at least not for everyone. I lift regularly *and* eat
like an idiot. Sure, I have a pretty puffy mid-section but my enormous ass
(in a good way), thighs, shoulders, biceps, and chest help detract from
that...somewhat.
As I tell to the ladies, I have a six pack, I just keep it in the mini
fridge. >> Stay informed about: Six-pack abs possible? |
