I suggest you use your bar to deadlift, and consider getting a power
rack in which you can squat. These two exercises are excellent. A very
good beginner's program is found in Pavel Tsatsouline's "Power To The
People!" - http://www.kbnj.com/ptp.htm - in which you deadlift and side
press for 2 sets of 5 reps on each exercise, using long rest periods,
and do this 5 days a week. It's a solid approach to acquiring skill at
the beginning of your lifting career, and the book gives good guidance
on how to cycle your weights so that you continue to make progress,
don't get stale, and avoid overtraining and injury. All it requires is
a bar and weights, and a rubber mat to lift on.

I always suggest taking a look at Dan John's free ebook. It's a good
read, it's highly motivational, and it has workout routines that
require very little equipment. The price is right too Smile.

With a pair of 4x4's and some hardware you can make yourself a simple rack
and with some adjustable sawhorses you can have spotter bars. They'll take
you a very long way.
