Hi,
I have just begun walking daily and I have two issues which I would
need help with:
1) could someone please recommend good reasonably-priced walking
shoes? I live in Florida so the weather is hot most of the year so I
would need them well aerated and I have a small bone-spur so I would
need them soft/springy/cushioned. Since I have recently moved to the
USA I do not know local sport stores. Can anyone please reccommend a
shoe model and/or a store?
2) All my life when I walked I had a tendency to feel a rather strong
pain on the external part of my shin. Here is where this pain is
exactly located: looking from above, facing forward, if one would see
a cross-section of my shin made about one third up from my ankle to my
knee it would be in the muscle which is right below the skin at about
"three o'clock" (or right hand, external, side) on my right shin and
"nine o'clock" (or left hand, external, side) on my left foot. The
best I can tell is that this muscle might be called the 'soleus'
muscle. I also sometimes have this feeling at the front of my shin
(so it might be the 'tibialis anterior' muscle in this case).
It is somewhat worse on my right foot and it feel as if this small
muscle is a little too short or otherwise inflamed.
The feeling is much worse at the begginning but if I succeed in
walking about one mile it get better and after 2-3 miles it almost
disappears.
Should I pick some special type of shoe or is there anything else I
could do to prevent this muscle problem?
Thanks for everything!

I do most of my walking in Atlanta and I am currently loving my latest pair
of shoes. They are Asics Duomax Gels. The top of the shoes are a tight mesh.
Enough to keep feet from being cold in winter, but when feet are hot the
slightest breeze goes through the shoe to cool. These do not have much of an
arch, which is good for me because I have flat feet. No arch whatsoever.
Since I do marathon walks, the comfort of the shoe is critical.
I bought mine at Just Feet, but you should find them at any large sport shoe
dealer.
Sorry can't help you with the pain. Perhaps you should talk to a doctor?

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I realized too late that I forgot to mention
something probably relevant to both the shoe and the pain: I have
*high* arching feet...
Do you know of models wich are good for high-arched feet or do you
know whom I could ask?
Thanks!

It's basically your muscles not being used to the exercise. Give it
time. Ive been walking lately, slowly trying to get myself into
running shape again. Every few days I try to increase the pace just
a lil bit more. What I've noticed is that when I increase the pace
the shins start to burn, similar to what you mention, but after some
distance, goes away. I do throw in a slow day each week, about the
pace of where I was the week before and the soreness is non-existant.
Give your muscles some time & they'll catch up to where you want to
be.

I've been reading a lil on trying to aid in the prevention of this...
while it's mostly just symptoms of a beginner, calf raises & other
moves that work/stretch the calf have been recommended to assist a lil
w/ the shin soreness. >> Stay informed about: shoes & muscles |

You need orthotics.. you are walking on your heal and fore portion of the
foot .. nothing touching inbetween..

Regarding the pain you feel, are you overweight at all? I experience this
same pain, plus bad back pain, when I start up walking after gaining a bunch
of weight. Once I struggle through it and loose some weight, ALL of the
pain gradually fades until it's no longer a problem.
Hope this helps,
Robert

sure thing. my BMI= 29.7 (that's for a little over 6'2 at 40 years
old but with a rather heavy muscular build). Add to this very arched
feet which give me blisters since all my weight is either at ball or
the heel of my foot. one last thing. I got a Polar a5 heart monitor
and took the walk self-test and got a lousy VO2max score of 24
the good news is that the best I can tell is that my feet are neither
pronating nor supinating and that even though I have started
exercising for the first time in 10 years I can quite comfortably
spend one full hour at 72& of max. heart rate and enjoy it (once the
first painful mile is over). I walk the mile in about 16 minutes now.
any advice about what I should aim for?
any ideas for shoes?
books to read?
thanks!

I use New-Balance because they last and have several widths to pick from.
I pick up last years models at a Big-5 chain store.
I usually retire them after 1000 miles from my regular walking but still
wear them a lot.

THE most important things about exercise shoes is that they FIT RIGHT and
have enough support for whatever exercise you are doing.
Personally I've been comfy running in Saucony Grid Aura TR shoes for the
last couple of years. However, when shopping for new shoes I don't assume
that "the same" will still be right for me -- not the same model & not even
the same size. I have walking shoes from a couple of years ago that just
don't "feel right" this spring -- so I need new walking shoes; meanwhile I'm
demoting old running shoes for walk-days. I pay about $60 for a pair of my
Sauconys, less any discount or coupon I may have. But I am willing (& able)
to splurge on my feet, which are too important to me to skimp on -- not only
in a general sense but as a diabetic the exercise is an essential part of my
medical/control regime.
If you find a shoe that works for you, try to get another pair right away,
as the model you have may be discontinued or changed -- athletic shoes are
re-jiggered all the time!
