How much muscle soreness is normal?

Post subject: How much muscle soreness is normal?

I'm in my mid-50s and work out 3X per week doing mostly heavy upper body
exercises (incline benches, chin ups, flys, dips, curls, etc). Been doing
this for the past 5 years. My muscles are a little sore after exercising
and stay that way until I workout again two days later. In other words, I'm
slightly sore all the time ... Surprised)

Am I doing too much, or is this slight soreness normal? Should I wait for
all the minor aches to disappear before the next workout?

Also, I don't take any supplements. Should I? Protein? What should I take
to minimize sore muscles post-workout?

If you have access to heat therapy, steam or whirlpool, spend 10-15 minutes there post workout.

Another smart arse.

the truth is you won't get info on DOMS in this newsgroup. They are all
super tough and ignore all muscle soreness.
I've settled for waiting between bouts of weight lifting until muscle
soreness doesn't get in the way of life too much. But then I'm much
older than you.

Work legs in one of the 3 workouts to give yourself more recovery time.
More upper back work and less chest/shoulders couldn't hurt either.
As a senior lifter you should do mostly compound exercises. Do few
isolation exercises

At least take a multi-vitamin. Take protein supplements if you don't get
in enough protein each day (approx. 0.8 g per pound bw).

If I do two or more full body workouts a week I don't get sore, unless I change
routines.

Working out infrequently causes soreness. Changing exercises or rep ranges
causes soreness. IME.
