The reason for the closing have nothing to do with trying to protect the
players, only protecting the fields. When they're muddy past a certain
point, they get worse in a hurry if you play on them. Otherwise soccer
is played in all sorts of weather, and if the game had been on an
artificial surface, we would have played. The field condition thing is
a vicious circle - the areas already most trashed are those closest to
the goal, and they're the ones that would get even worse if we played
today. 90% of the field was in fine shape and would have survived a few
games without much damage.
On the whole, the one thing I do like about soccer is that the guys
playing it are built more or less like me for the most part. Whether or
not that makes them wusses is, as they say, for others to decide.

I am the head of a small company and have a lot of political preferences
I think you'd find Republican, but I think of them as places in which
the Democratic Party needs to change. I am, e.g., not a fan of unions
in the slightest these days. I think they had their place decades ago
but they have since become abusive of the power they wield and I think
that power ought to be taken away from them. Like I've said many times,
I'm a McCain Democratic. The traditional of being fiscally conservative
and socially liberal has a long history in this country that has frankly
been forgotten by both our major political parties. I dislike
bureaucracy as much as anyone - if you had to fill out the amount of
paperwork we have to fill out, anyone in their right mind would hate it.
But I do not wish for less government, just better government, and I
think the idea that less government is the solution to many modern-day
problems is simplistic, misguided, and altogether unAmerican.
Careful or I'll tell you what I really think.

Yeah, I just tried to pick a track off their album that demonstrated the
sound. I own the album and it's a bit on the "pops" side of what I'd
prefer, which is some real Viennese-inspired music.

First, the Democratic Party will change, but in moving to the Left, not the
Right. Second, the unions are far too strong for the Democratic Party to
tell them to take a hike. And I would agree with you about them having
their place once upon a time. But the militant Left is much too vocal for
their party to ignore. Any movement to the Center would be met with loud,
whiny cries, similar to Gollum as he writhes in anguish.
Unlike you, I do wish for less government and more private sector. There
will never be "better government", as it is bureaucratic by it's very
nature.
And given the "spend like a drunken sailor" mindset of my party, I'm a bit
disenchanted myself to say the least.

Those two statements summarize the big problem in American politics
today. We have moved away from one of the most important principles of
the founding fathers, pluralism, and all the things that go with it,
like real respect for the opposite side.

Bullshit. There has never been a time when both Parties respected each
other. Look at the Industrial Revolution and Unions vs. Big Business. In
fact, we may have MORE respect today than we did back then. >> Stay informed about: maximum fat loss per day |

Don't be disingenuous, Larry. You know exactly what I'm talking about.
We can start with the Victorian sexual mores. People can comply with
any stringent moral values they wish, whether they be Christian,
Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise. They are also free to teach those values
to their children. However, it is not the business of the federal
government to be dictating those moral values to others, particularly
between consenting adults. To the extent that any such laws are
proper, enactment should be left to the States. >> Stay informed about: maximum fat loss per day |
