First of all, sorry for my english, I'll try to explain what I need to
know
I have to lose weight and don't know if elliptical cross trainers are
ok. I know that a low intensity program is ideal to lose weight (about
60-70% of max cardio rate for at least 30-40 minutes). With this type of
machine, can I remain within this range? Is it recommended for weight
lose? Thanks a lot

Yes, ellipticals are great for losing weight. One way to get a great
workout is to listen to an mp3 player (or any other music source that's
permissible in your gym), really get going for the fast/energetic songs
and then ease back down for the slower songs. Being able to adjust your
tempo that easily is one of the things I like about the elliptical -
unlike the treadmill where you'd have to guess: hmm, is this song 7mph or
7.5?

I don't know what the optimimum range is, although Donovan has already
provided some input on that. My own target is to push as hard as I can
over the course of the hour so that I can get through the hour but also I
really know I've done something when I lock the gym back up.

Is the idea of varying the intensity during the course of a workout really
so out there? It seemed pretty much like the idea of fartlek that Mistress
Krista describes on her site, except that I use the lineup of songs on my
playlist to determine when I speed up or slow down rather than a stop
watch. I find it makes my workout more enjoyable than just setting the
treadmill for a steady pace for an hour and chugging along, but maybe
that's just me. I find I do the same thing when I'm swimming - one lap of
butterfly can really get my heart going and then I'll do a lazy
backstroke back.
147.5 this morning. I'm 5'6" and maintaining a 60 lb loss for over 2
years. I'd still like to lose another 20 lb of fat, but at the same time
I've recently started working w/ a trainer and my goals are to increase my
strength and LBM. Since I'm quite sure I still qualify as a newbie, I'm
hoping that I can do those things while still losing fat or at least
maintaining my status quo. My weight is almost exactly the same as it was
when I started strength training, but some of my measurements are down an
inch or so, so I think everything is trending in the right direction.
When I get to the point where I don't seem to be able to make any more
gains in strength while following my current diet/cardio program, then I'm
going to have to make a decision as to how to proceed, but so far I seem
to be making progress.

Good thinking. I was sitting here trying to think of an interesting
tag line if I needed to solve this problem, but Seth has it nailed I
believe.

So, to qualify your statement. How much do you weigh? And try not to

They're very good.

No. The more calories you burn, the better.

More like 80-90%. Only do less than that if you're tired from previous workouts.

Yes (within 60-70 or 80-90)

Yes (the elliptical machine is), and no (not at 60-70% max heart rate)

I'm an older woman and I found that long-slow cardio didn't help me lose
fat. Doing intensive cardio, like intervals or working at a very hard
pace helps, and so does weightlifting. There's nothing wrong wiht
elliptical machines but listen to Donovan: go hard and fast on it - at
least in spurts, i.e., intervals.
