On the cross-trainer machines I use its got Fat Burn listed as 65% of
max heart rate with Cardio as 80% of max heart rate. Also listed that
65% for my age is about 130bpm.

Question is :- Is this really the best rate to exercise at to burn
fat?

Why isnt a higher heart rate better? If I'm exercising at a higher
rate am I burning less fat then?

The thing is thats a pretty low heart rate - when I try to stick to
this it leaves the machine on the lowest setting and is always telling
me to slow down...

At 65% the percentage of muscle vs fat loss is optimum for bodyfat
reduction. Supposedly it is best to break it up into two 30 minute sessions
with a 20 minute rest. 75% of the loss is supposedly fat rather than 50%
that way.

To the best of my knowledge, the good thing about exercising at lower
intensity for cardio and fat-burning purposes is pretty simple - you can
keep it up for longer, and if you can keep it up for longer, you burn
more calories and/or you get more cardio exercise.

Exercising at 130 bpm wouldn't feel like much exercise to me - go for
the higher percentage most of the time.

Keep in mind that variety is good, so perhaps one day per week at 65-70%
and another at more than 80% could work well for you.

It wasn't obvious to me apparently Smile. I just figured that you were
some sort of super hero.

After hearing how much you can clean, I wouldn't be surprised at all
to hear that you can pound out 400m sprints with little rest.

Seriously though, part of the reason that I hang out here is that I
really don't have much of a feel for what is actually possible when it
comes to athletics. The only people that I know that are physically
active are the ones that I personally have convinced to exercise.

Fitness is a journey, not a destination, grasshopper.

Running 5 minute miles for a marthon, Walking 7 minute miles for 31 miles.
twice body weight for CJ or bench is not too difficult. 5 times body weight
for leg press not too demanding.
