Yes.

The "problem" with increasing muscle mass is that, despite the fact that
muscle burn calories, the BMI changes wich means the mass/surface area
changes.

The body has a lower mass to surface area when you are 250 pounds of muscle
instead of 200 pounds, so the body becomes more efficient at retaining heat.

And most of the calories we consume are converted into heat.

Like i said before, low carb diets and thermogenics reign supreme when it
comes to losing weight.

Just so everybody knows, I didn't write that last sentence about
"that's difficult"--somebody snipped the text together so it looked
like me. I'm not bitching about how difficult losing weight is, I
know from hard experience. I am slowly building up my activity level,
as I mentioned previously, and right now I am waiting on my gym
membership to kick things into gear. I have a lot of health issues,
so I am pretty serious about losing some weight. Thanks to the people
who mentioned specific exercises and some specific recommendations for
a basic workout, I will try them, although I have to say it's pretty
intimidating to approach a gym and fitness machines for the first
time.

Hmm. Yesterday, iirc, I did about 30 minutes on a Life Fitness
treadmill at about "3" speed and that covered about 1.5 miles.

(reaches for calculator)

That'd only be 10.5 miles a week if I did the same thing ever day of
that week. If I did an hour, however, you'd have your "20+ miles a
week." Well, if you call 21 miles 20+, of course. Actually, the 1.5
was done at "3" for about 20 minutes with a 5-minute cooldown of about
"2". And it was about 27 minutes, again, iirc - which I probably
don't. ANYWAY!

I agree with that. I also recognize the fact (okay, what I remember
reading might be fact) that the body loves its status quo. If you're
fat then your body embraces the fat. If you're skinny then your body
looooooves the skinny.

> I know, I did the same *@#!! thing.

heh Surprised)

But, fortunately, you found something that works and that you enjoy.
Huzzah! And that's what it's all about.

Depends on how easily boredom overtakes you or anyone. People are
always around who strike up conversations, many gyms provide magazines
to browse, I read a few pages from Lee Child's 'Echo Burning'. And
there's people watching, of course. One gym patron almost fell over as
they exited the aerobic death trap in front of the Life Cycle I was
using. The woman one machine over asked if he was okay, but the man
was either too embarrassed to reply or was wearing something iPod- or
mp3-related which blocked out her offer of concern. The woman shrugged
and went on to say that she'd fallen off a machine, too.

Hmmm.

Boring? I don't think so.

Tom Anderson, I read your post. I Googled. I pondered even. I snipped
and added the 're' in place of snipped text and then...

I posted an empty reply. D'OH!

Coach, is that you?

Hmmm.

My cousins had a pool. One time I stopped at their house and had an
ice water while watching some TV. That was pretty much as intense as
it got. Yeah, pretty much.

We had a 2.8-mile course and my best time was, like, 18:57. I think 15
minutes is pretty good. And I think it was 'low intensity' is a pretty
accurate description of my cross country career. There was a 10-miler
that I completed in 72 minutes followed by an 80-minute clocking the
following year. I just ran. There was no "waaayy harder" interval-
hills-etc schtufff going on. There was joking around, running the back
roads of Lancaster County, drinking Gatorade, and enjoying time with
my friends. Isn't that what sport is all about?

you may have thought it was 'low intensity' at the time, but you were
(or at least should have been, if you were trying to be competetive)
running waaayy harder than most people do when they go out for a jog,
even on your slow days. couple that with intervals, hills, etc that
you were likely doing in practices, and the actual races...

Uh, a quick listen to (or perusal of the lyrics of) the skits on the
'Dr Octagonecologyst' album should give you the answer ...

Rectal rebuilding? "You can call 1-800PP51-DooDoo." From 'I Got To
Tell You (A Visit To The Doctor)'.

And "You have bees flying around your rectum
You need a bad operation
Gimme the scissors
Hammer
Flame" From 'General Hospital'.

Zoinks!

In my mis-spent youth my buddies and I has this pattern for summers:
Every other day, we'd ride to the beach in the morning, swim, body-surf
and ogle women for six hours or so before riding home late afternoons.
Stop off for Gatorade about halfway home.

The ride was twenty miles each way and a few hours of fighting the ocean
was pretty much just what we needed. Head home, grill up meat, act
like the idiots we were.

In retrospect, it's probably the best shape I'd been in.

Gatorade: It's what memories are made of!

Or something like that.

I missed this post. Great read, if you're still around. Uh, actually,
it's a great read even if he's not still around.

Exactly how summer's are meant to be, imo.

I would personally recommend a 3 day routine similar to the one on my
blog (http://workin-out.blogspot.com/). If your goal is to get in
shape you just need to remember to stick with your workout. That is
the hardest part i think, a few good ways to stick with your work out
are to make it fun, vary it from your last work out and have as much
knowledge as possible. I would browse around online for info on weight
lifting for people your age and see what you cant dig up. I have some
good links in my blog that may help you, he more knowledge you have
the better. I first started weightlifting 3 years ago when i got into
martial arts, since then I consider myself to be in good shape, even
tough I occasionally sip a work out for a week. The thing you should
consider starting slow and making sure to do not hurt yourself, and
make working out painfull, if you make it pain full you will not want
to go back to the gym.

Good Luck
