I'm sorry that you don't enjoy exercise. Truly I am. I personally
find that the more athletic I get the more enthusiastic I am about
exercise.
When I first started I was overweight and ridiculously out of shape.
Even jogging a mile was beyond my capabilities. The first five weeks
or so of working out were hard (I ran/walked a mile three times a
week). However, I quickly began to improve and that was quite
heartening.
Part of the problem is that most people bite off more than they can
chew. You don't have to kill yourself when you are starting out, you
just have to build good habits.
By the way, the reason sumo wrestlers look miserable is that what they
are doing is ridiculously hard. Wrestling of any kind is very hard
work. That doesn't mean that wrestling isn't fun.

I will certainly agree that it is the fastest and easiest way. The
problem, of course, is that if you want to keep the weight off you
still need to change your lifestyle, and that is almost certainly
harder without the incentive that being overweight adds.
As a concrete example, I have been weighing myself on a daily basis
for so long that I can basically tell within a half pound or so how
much I weigh before I even step on the scale. That sort of body
awareness isn't natural, it is learned, and without it maintaining
your weight is very difficult.

Whatever floats your boat. Personally, I am always skeptical of
expensive "shortcuts."

Nothing personal friend, but I am pretty sure that it is the surgery
crowd that suggests taking your life in your hands. I'm merely
suggesting that people start by mixing in a little exercise.
I don't care how obese you are, walking is probably significantly less
dangerous than surgery.

Actually, that's not quite true. I, for instance, won't compare
surgeons to "Nazis." That's where I draw the line .

For 3 easy payments of $4000 you too can have the body you deserve.*
* Results may vary, and diet and exercise will be necessary after
surgery.

I hardly ever had aching muscles after the first two weeks of regular
exercise. Once again, many people believe that exercise is only
effective if it is painful, and that is simply not the case.
> It's also not cheap unless you mean walking around the area where

I don't exercise at a gym. I lift weights in my basement with an
Olympic set that I purchased for $115 (on sale). After a while I had
to spend more money on extra plates. I also have a bench that I
purchased from Walmart for another $150 or so, but it's not
necessary. In fact, I don't really use it any more.
For cardio I generally run near my home. Lately I have been replacing
jogging with kettlebell swings and/or kettlebell snatches. My
kettlebell, plus an instructional manual, cost about $180. If I was
on a budget I would probably have purchased a kettlestack instead.
> Fun? You've got be kidding us. It's one of the most B-O-R-I-N-G

You just need to find a more interesting form of exercise. One thing
is certain, I am *never* bored deadlifting, and things get even more
fun when you start lifting the weight over your head. When I am
strength training the implement has my full attention .
I will admit that I find cardio to be a little boring. I try to liven
it up by either running with someone else or by using high intensity
intervals to shorten the amount of time I have to spend running. I am
not a huge fan of hamstering away on a treadmill.

Walking on a treadmill probably is boring. I've never done it. I
don't own a treadmill, and the few times I have used one I have
invariably set it on some ridiculous pre-programmed course and then
hung on for dear life. Of course, walking on a treadmill is also so
mindless that you can do it while watching television or some other
interesting pass time. I like to read, for example, and have
considered walking on a treadmill while reading.
Most people could change their life completely simply by walking on a
treadmill while watching television instead of sitting down.

Surgery is not safer than walking and walking is considered exercise. Start
by altering what you eat and add a few extra steps every day and as you
start to lose a little weight - add a few more steps. The weight didn't
appear overnight and certainly won't go away overnight. I lost about 25
pounds and it has stayed gone for two years - I am seriously back on my low
carb diet and plan to slowly lose another 40-60 pounds. I've been through
enough surgeries - all necessary. I would not have weight loss surgery
unless it was a life or death situation. It is much healthier and safer to
change the way you eat. >> Stay informed about: Tips if you are fat and depressed: |

In that vein, here's what's been working for me in the diet department
(reposted from T-mag):
7 Habits of Highly Effective Nutritional Programs
1. Eat every 2-3 hours, no matter what. You should eat between 5-8 meals
per day.
2. Eat complete (containing all the essential amino acids), lean protein
with each meal.
3. Eat fruits and/or vegetables with each food meal.
4. Ensure that your carbohydrate intake comes from fruits and
vegetables. Exception: workout and post-workout drinks and meals.
5. Ensure that 25-35% of your energy intake comes from fat, with your
fat intake split equally between saturates (e.g. animal fat),
monounsaturates (e.g., olive oil), and polyunsaturates (e.g. flax oil,
salmon oil).
6. Drink only non-calorie containing beverages, the best choices being
water and green tea.
7. Eat mostly whole foods (except workout and post-workout drinks).

It depends (US$1.00 + s&h to Lyle). Take the number of target calories
and divide by the number of meals. Finding the caloric requirements for
an individual has been detailed to death here in MFW and elsewhere and
is left as an exercise for the reader.

I pack more than one lunch, myself. The fridge at working has three to
four meals loading it up that are mine.
THAT said, peanut butter, tuna (and other fish) in its original
packaging, canned beans... there's a lot of options out there. I cook
chicken breasts and cut them up into a salad; pack it in a cooler with
ice and you'll have a relatively safe meal.

Apple, banana, cherries, dates... fill the rest of the alphabet. Every
damned time you eat, eat a fruit or vegetable.

You don't have to figure it out of each meal - merely for the day's
food. It's not as tough as it you're making it sound, although it takes
actually -doing- it.

Oh, thank god!
The fact is, it *is* possible to control what goes into your body. While
I haven't lost weight this way - it's not my goal - I do feel a whole
hell of a lot better.

It's been tried, believe me. He's far too obsessed over himself and how he
looks and feels compares to others that it wouldn't do any good. He does
need to lose some weight, but I don't think it would help much with his
depression. There'd still be the kooky behavior, threats of RL stalking, and
