re: apple on toothpicks
Exactly... my squats are currently less than my bench. That is
something else I could probably work on. I've never read an article on
this, but I've heard that growth is inhibited by your body if you
neglect one area (i.e. legs). Since your body has a predisposition
towards growing proportionally. So yesterday I also hit the legs.
Oddly enough a buddy got me in for legs two weeks ago and I did 90
pounds more this week from two weeks ago. I used to do legs because my
workout buddy loved them. But, once I stopped working out with him I
stopped with legs. I was up to a proportional weight (i.e. much more
than my bench) on squats, so perhaps this is will make growing the legs
that much quicker?

Yeah... not really worried about increasing mass right now. But
balancing out might help bring down the weight too?

Fair enough... well, I guess this is one I'll have to agree to
disagree. I think one point we can agree on is that I can get a lot of
effect from adjusting my diet. And I'll do my best to do so.

I'm not a food taster
Smile

My job is fairly strenuous and also as I mentioned almost my top
priority (beneath friends and family).

Anyway, I'll do my best to "digest" this advice and follow it as
rigourously as I can. I think one thing I can quickly benefit from is
to reduce my portions at each sitting and make them more protein heavy.

Sound like a good compromise?

Well there ya go. You need to be working your legs regularly. Sounds like
you'll be able to gain a lot of strength and size pretty quickly. Be
prepared to lose a few more reps on your pullups, though.

Agreed. That one is suspicious. I'd like to see DZ weigh in on that
one.

Maybe he's a member of the 330 bench / 135 lb squat club. Think apple on
toothpicks.

I weigh 200 pounds and I'm 6 foot.

I've always known according to the BMI (which is really just using your
height/weight ratio to see if you fit into a "healthy" category -
doesn't consider muscle mass, etc) that I'm overweight. But I always
assumed my greater than average (for an average male my age or any age
for that matter) muscle made it irrelevant. But regardless of how
accurate those scales are, I think it is time to slim down... if for no
other reasons than:
1. Long term health
2. Better performance at endurance sports **
3. Summer appearance
4. impressing my friends
Smile

** There are a number of activities I enjoy in which being heavier is a
disadvantage (hampers my performance) - like volleyball, climbing,
running, and blading.

That's interesting, I've been told for over 10 years, that eating
infrequently is considered bad for your metabolism since your body will
enter a "starvation" state where it just gets more efficient at its use
of fat. Thus you have to work that much harder to burn the fat. I'll
do some reading on that.

How many pull-ups can you do without weight or do you just train for
weighted pull-ups for 8 reps or less?

How do you strap the weight to yourself? I've tried putting a dumbbell
between my legs, but that kills my weak little girly hamstrings
Smile

Do you have a strap that you wrap around your waist?

You have mentioned your weight (scales lie), your BMI (charts assume),
and an electric hand type bodyfat measurement (is highly suspect). If
you really want to know what bodyfat percentage is (bet its way lower
than 20 or 25%) and want to find out what bodyfat % you really are (and
thats where the truth lies here), get caliper pinch tested at your gym
(which should offer it). Also tape measurements dont lie. Jot down the
numbers now and see if you can make an improvement in a month.

Hmm... okay, I guess I should have also warned posters that I'm only
willing to make small adjustments initially so that the rest of my life
isn't impacted (the most important of which is my job - sorry to keep
beating that dead horse). Anyway, I appreciate your advice and will
look in PSMF some more. Though I guess I'm uninclined to buy the book
until I'm satisfied that it offers something significantly better than
any other weight loss technique. No offense intended - textual
communication is so limited in this regard - I really don't mean to
imply that PSMF doesn't work, I'm just a very skeptical person and not
one to invest a lot of time/money/energy on something that I don't
believe in (yet).

Thanks again,

Thanks to everyone who has posted. It seems a number of the threads
have gotten a little side tracked (probably as much my fault as anyone)
- which is totally cool, I enjoy the discussion and besides this is a
newsgroup - it isn't just for me
Wink

Feel free to post further ideas that I could use.

As I just mentioned in another post, I'm not willing (probably this
will make my attempt/effort ineffective) to make massive changes in my
existing life-style. I could see myself dropping my caloric intake by
as much as 1/3 to a quarter. I could see myself changing the times I
eat (more or less frequently) - also not right before bed. I could see
myself modifying the types of foods I consume (their composition of
fats, carbs, and proteins). I could also see myself doing more cardio.
But, I guess I only have so much energy/time in a given day after
considering work, so I'll just have to work with that to effect some
change (as minor as it will be).

The Lipo 6 hopefully will make my efforts more effective, but as some
posters have made clear, unless I'm willing to make radical changes, I
can't expect radical results. After taking Lipo 6 for one day, I've
noticed some things - one thing is that I don't ever consume caffeine
(no coffee, tea, pop and even only rarely choclate) and it does have
caffeine, so that should make the next month fairly alert
Wink

But, I've also found my mouth feels really dry (since I started taking
it) - I guess that is a side effect of the dehydratory quality of
caffeine and perhaps some other components in it. So I'm drinking a
ton of water - which is probably a good thing.

Lastly, please don't take my spin on your advice as insulting or a
waste of your time - it is food for thought and I may try to assimilate
the information at a later date.

Thanks again,

Good advice - I'll do the tape measure. I guess, the scales
measurement was more of a wake up call then me thinking it was 100%
accurate. I would guess you're probably right in its inaccuracies...
not sure if I'm less than 20% though. In any case, I would like to cut
back a bit - though having an accurate measurement before I start and
after would be more satisfying (better audit quality Smile

Not that I'm likely to fork out the dough for it, but I've heard those
tubs of waters they use for body fat are the best. Hmm... I wonder if
I could get a good rate at a local university... I think I'll check
into that.

Thanks,
