Ack!
I thought the site was doing OK (more knowledgeable people may disagree)
until I got to "change your exercise routine every four weeks to cause muscle
confusion" and "in any event, work sets should be near failure for the
concentric or lifting portion of the movement. ... the last 2 reps of your final
set should be a slightly out-of-body experience."
<spits>
A lot of good info, but a lot of bad info buried in the good info.
<rinses mouth out>
blech!
In any case, for the original poster: don't worry about a web site to determine
your daily caloric requirements. The best that they can give you is an estimate
that is too rough anyway. Instead, track everything you are eating for a few
weeks. (you can use www.fitday.com to determine how many calories
most of the foods are - as well as track yourself.) If your weight went up or
stayed the same during that period, cut back on what you are eating. Repeat
the process. Note that you only want to lose 2 lbs per week.

In case you didn't catch it, Hussman has the 'scientific explanation' of
why Body for Life works. It's a popular link for the Body for Life
community.

Be warned that the consensus in alt.support.diet is that the calories
expended estimates on fitday are ridiculously overstated. But it's
still really valuable as a way of tracking calories in.

Absolutely true. But the rate at which we burn calories and the
efficiency at which we store them depend on a number of variables.
Couch potatos pretty much cannot stay lean enough without adding
significant exercise to their schedule. A couch potato who reduces
calorie intake is going to be hungry all the time, and will either
regain the weight or be in an unnatural and uncomfortable hungry state
forever. Weight is a questionable metric to watch for folks who aren't
grossly obese, anyway. When I was in the US Navy in the 80s they
started bodyfat percent testing. I was renting a house offbase with
three other sailors. The youngest, skinniest one of us was disgusted to
find out he was also the fattest. We three older guys, all with medium
build, were working out daily. The skinny kid played softball on
Saturdays, and thought that was "exercise". Because he was skinny, he
thought he was the opposite of fat. He wasn't. You could grab his arm
and press your fingers down to the bone; he had the muscle tone of a
jelly donut.
While overeating and a poor diet can sabotage an exercise plan, most
folks aren't going to succeed without regular workouts of some kind.
Anyone who doesn't exercise a lot isn't medically normal. It's not a
moral failing; but it's not medically normal either. We're made to
move.
