It is the word "effective" that matters most here. What "effect" are
you after? Fitness means many things to many people. What will you
actually use? Is it even possible to know until you've used it for a
while?

> I've settled on dumb bells and bench for the weight end

Lots of people love Concept rowers - if you're into that, I think it's a
good investment. It would bore me to tears but that's just me. The
other things to keep in mind is your age - the older we get, the more
important strength training becomes. I don't know if it's because I
have an endurance background, but I can keep my endurance in good enough
shape (low resting pulse) with very little work and found I was losing
what little muscle I had as I moved through my 40's, so I've settled
into a program that's mostly weights using kettlebells and barbells, no
dumbbells and no bench, and I happy with the training and with the
results.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide.

a bit of everything really..... good cardio workout,
good muscle development , and most important
flexibility but yet nothings that impacts any joints.

So, you search for a topic that annoys you, and then read
it from start to finish. Do you do that just to have something
to bitch and whine about, or do you have your own "special" reason?

Main advantage with a Recumbent is that with the seating position your upper
body is braced (as opposed to a standard ex cycle) so that you can do a
dumbell workout while cycling. You can do chest flies, bicep curls, tricep
ext, shoulder presses all while cycling.

Only a novice would say that rec cycles don't work 'the arms' - a smart
bookeeper should also learn how to spell 'recumbent'
