I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Thanks for the welcome.
I've been posting to usenet using my real name since at least 1995
(probably earlier, but that's as far as google can find me). So far, no
one's hunted me down and killed me. I even used to post my contact
information on the neijia list and *that* was a tough room. I'm afraid I'm
just not interesting enough to get my own stalker.
Sad, really, but there it is.

That was all true for me, too. But then I got kids (who are active
online) and a business and started to want to compartmentalize my life.
What I'm saying is that your life changes and some day you might wish
you hadn't let it all hang out there like that. Oh, and the internet
changed, too. It's not just google, there are a ton of places carrying
usenet feeds and pretending its their own content and selling ads based
on what we wrote. They obstruct email info but the way you're quoted
shows up.
Look, I'm just telling you that it's a good idea. I don't give a rat's
ass if you do it or not. You make an easier target than me, now, and
that's fine with me.

Yes, but you're a pretty well trained runner, Donovan.
Do you really think that the typical "wants to lose weight"
person can really stay at 80-90% of his max HR for 30-40
minutes?
I'd say you'd have to pretty near elite anyway to do that
and if you were, you wouldn't be worrying about losing
a few pounds or using an elliptical?
I suspect that a chubby person who tried to lose weight
your way would give up after 5 minutes or less and probably
never try again.

Yep. As long as the exercise is relatively enjoyable for them.
Beginning runners, and people in aerobics classes (e.g. cardio
box) stay well above 80% on a regular basis.
> I'd say you'd have to pretty near elite anyway to do that
> and if you were, you wouldn't be worrying about losing
> a few pounds or using an elliptical?
No. The difference between the fit and unfit person is that
the fit person can produce more power at 80-90%. Both are able
to sustain 80-90% for about the same amount of time.
> I suspect that a chubby person who tried to lose weight
> your way would give up after 5 minutes or less and probably
> never try again.
Most chubby people quit after 5 minutes or less regardless. To
be succesful takes some motivation. However, 80-90% is not
exceptionally painful or difficult.
In fact, one thing I've noticed in helping out beginning runners
is that it's harder to get them to train at below 90% (and
damn near impossible to get them to go under 70%) than it is
to get them to train above 80%.
Cheers,

Dally, I know you're disturbed over John "Charles" Hudson's
behaviour, but you should probably just let it go. Yeah, he's being
an arse. What can you do? That's just the way he is. As far as
your identity: Unless you do all your on-line activities though an
anonymizing proxy service and use a pseudonym from Day 1, there's
little you can do about it. When I first got on Usenet, before
Internet connections were common even for businesses, using real
identities was pretty common. By the time employing pseudonyms
started appearing "necessary," it was far too late for me. So I just
don't worry about it. Most Usenet/Internet "old-timers" don't worry
about it.
John "Charles" Hudson does what he does to you because it obviously
works. He enjoys playing the arse and getting reactions. The
solution to this problem ought to be obvious.

I went through this in great detail back in January why I preferred not
to use my real name and I don't need to go into it again. Suffice to
say that I care. I don't care if you judge it as worthy of caring or not.
I don't really care if other people just shrug and go with it, but I was
one of those people who got on originally with my real name in the early
90's without thinking through the implications. I wish someone had told
me how much I'd regret it. So I pass that message on.
I'm naive and kind and work with kind-hearted people. It still stuns me
when people turn out to be hate-filled intent on malicious bullying. I
can't quite believe people are that awful. But I've been persuaded.
I'm not equipped emotion-wise or caliber-wise to handle it. I know the
implications of that.

You are too nice (and trusting) for your own good.
If any group on usenet will break you of that, this one will. <lol>

Yeah, but you don't get to change your mind. Neither does she for that matter.

No, you make an easier target because you react to everything. If this stuff
bothers you, make use of killfiles. But I'd recommend just developing a thick
skin. As far as killfiles are concerned, I'm with the "John Williams school".

Actually, what you're saying is that *your* life changed and *you* wish
you hadn't let it all hang out there like that. You don't know what
Martha's situation is, and it's not up to you to tell her how she should

I'm not "judging" it as "worthy" of caring about or not. What I'm
suggesting is that responding to Mr. Hudson's baiting you isn't going
to make the problem go away. All you're doing by responding is
empowering the very behaviour to which you *say* you object.
This is the last I'll say on the subject. Do what you want, Dally.
But don't be surprised when the result of feeding a troll is that it
continues to thrive.
