Cooldown is not about burning calories though is it?

"Shower" springs to mind. A good brisk rubbing motion does do wonders!

Put it this way, when Gordon Pirie did his interval workouts, he did a
45 minute "warm up" jog. Does anyone really take 45 minutes to warm up,
or was he doing it to get in extra volume ? There's no rule that says
that your interval workout has to start and stop with reps. You can do
extra volume at the start or the finish of the workout.

BTW, if I were to shower straight after the last rep of a hard interval
workout, I'd probably still be sweating when I came out of the shower.

Cheers,

Yeah but 10 minutes cooldown? Why not 5 plus shower?

There's no way I would be able to 'sweat out' in such a short interval
after a strenuous interval training session.

I do a 5 minute warm-down on the machine I finish up on - usually the
Cross Trainer, then do a 10-15 minute stretch routine, weigh myself,
sit and have my whey protein shake for 5 minutes and then hit the
showers. That is just about right for me.

Have a great weekend Lordy - you know I am!! ;o)

I personally wouldnt spend 10 minutes cooling down on the same apperatus.
(which is what I assumed was meant!)

Sounds good to me! My weekday, lunchtime sessions are a bit rushed though.
The weekend workouts have more leisurely periods.

Hmm, there was some study over at Lyle's site posted saying that
several short bursts of very high intensity increased both aerobic and
anaerobic capacity. Have to see... ah, found it.

More than about 10 seconds and you won't be going all out. And if you're a
sprinter type, not even that long.

But, as you say, that's not really the point.

Well, actually, yes. If I want to be ready to do a race properly, then I
need to spend something like that long warming up. This is fairly normal for
rowers and cyclists, at least - and my impression was that runners do
something like that much, too?

I don't think I'd bother with that much warm-up for anything but a race,
though.

I use manual mode and just move the effort where I want it when I want
it.

I don't know any distance runners who do a warmup that long at the club level,
and when I saw some of the top Americans come to NY for a road race, they
weren't doing very much warming up either.

Probably depends a lot on the event. For runners, shorter distance means more
warmup. If you're sprinting, you sure don't want to come out of the blocks
cold. But if you're doing a marathon, you want to stay cool for the first 20
miles. A track 10k for a fast runner (who finishes the race sub 30) is in the
middle -- it's fast enough that you dont' want to be cold, but long enough that
you don't want to leave your race on the warmup track.

Cheers,

I see what you're saying.

I suppose I'm mainly thinking about short distance stuff - rowing you never
really do more than half an hour at pace ever, and most races are 2k, so
about 6 minutes. Cycling I've mainly done short time trials - 10s and 25s,
so generally less than an hour. For that range, if you don't warm up pretty
well, you lose a couple of minutes in the first five miles, and being
slightly fresher for the last five or twenty miles isn't enough to get you
that time back; and while a rowing race isn't actually a time trial it's
usually raced flat out from the gun.
