Hello. I began a weight lifting program at home with free weights last
week. The first 3 times I did one set with a weight I could handle
throughout easily. This week I bumped up the intensity by dong 2 sets with
enough weight that it was difficult to finish the last set. After the work
out (about 30 mins total), I felt weak and nauseous for about 2 hours. I ate
a bit of protein right after the workout, then a bit of fruit juice, but
mainly I just had to lay down! I found I was extremely tired by bed time,
and slept like a rock. I feel great this morning.
Is it normal to feel weak and nauseous when you begin weight lifting?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, it happens to me every now and then, even now.
Make sure you eat a decent meal 2-6 hours before training.
If you haven't eaten anything for 3 hours or more, have
something light. I like to drink a couple of glasses of milk,
but have whatever you like. A little protein and a little
carbohydrate is good. The same afterwards.
On the other hand, you probably overdid it a bit in that
session and would be well advised to work up to that
level of exertion in smaller steps.

Make sure you are taking days off, with no weightlifting, at least 3 times a
week. You do not want to get into the overtraining trap, believe me. >> Stay informed about: beginner feeling nauseous, normal? |

Make sure you've drunk enough. I suppose dizziness would describe the
symptoms of dehydration better than nausea but I won't let that get in the
way of encouraging people not to make the same mistake I have
Otherwise ignore me and listen to the others' advice. >> Stay informed about: beginner feeling nauseous, normal? |

I used to get that way often after doing squats. I don't anymore, but
I never did pin it down, because I didn't care about it anymore when
it stopped. Maybe it was once I started jogging too.
Diet might have had an effect. One time I didn't get sick after
squats, and at the time it was an anomaly. All I could figure that was
unusual was that I hadn't eaten bread all day.
I work out in the morning now, before I eat anything, and I haven't
gotten sick yet. I feel a lot better if I don't eat for several hours
before lifting or jogging.

This is good advice. I typically do a protein shake 30 - 60 minutes pre-WO,
which is 1 cup skim milk, 40g protein and some fruit blended in. Also one
after, but the one before is more important for me because it gives me what
I need to perform without getting light headed.
