Where to get equipment?

Why? Usually you make up a DB from 1" hole 10 lb plates because larger
plates have bigger diameters, which is undesirable for some DB exercises.
Using 10's and under works fine for plates up to at least 110 pounds and
probably more with the right handles. BTW, you might try New York Barbell.

The 10 lb plates I have (Champs, EverLast) are 7 1/2" diameter. They
seem to me too big for the dumbbells (also Champs and Everlast).
Despite my misgivings, are they the right size?

I measured three different brands, including a professional style Ivanko DB,
and they're all roughly 8 inches. In the smaller weights, a solid DB would
have a smaller diameter, but once you get up there in weight, they go up to
about eight inches diameter.

Why buy new? Check your local want ads, thrift shops and garage sales.
Lots of weight and or exercise equipment collecting dust that may be
just what you are looking for at alot less cost.
Of course you may need a friend with a truck to help you out, but its
still worth it.

Curt asked for a follow-up so here it is.

Yesterday, I did business with Gym Source in Manhasset, Long Island.
My need was for 1 1/4 lb. plates, so that the dumbbell would start at
5lbs., not 2 1/2 lbs. This is a size that's hard to get - many places
don't have plates that small.

I had called them up last week and we determined that they had this
size in the warehouse, but not the store. It took a week, but they
got it.

My overall impression was good. Since their entire store is devoted
to fitness, they have a much bigger selection than Modell's. The
(only) salesman seemed far more professional than the kids who work at
Modell's. Of course, their emphasis is on 3-4 figure machines, so
they might be good for a bench or a bicycle.

What are some good brands for them? Better yet, a review of different
brands and models.

I asked about Olympic dumbbells and they didn't seem too strong in
that category. I'm working with max. 25lb dumbbells, so Olympics is a
ways off.

As to www.newyorkbarbells.com/, that's fine for Internet/telephone
order, but not for a visit. They're in Elmira, NY, which is about a 5
hour drive away. They did have 1 1/4 lb. plates.

Curt!!! Guess what?? I got in touch with Kim!!! (she is a friend of a
friend - can't believe it!!) I passed on your comments about wanting to meet
her etc - she said as coincidence goes - she said "Oh, is Curt that guy from
the newsgroup?" I hesitantly said "Y y yes . . ." - She replied "I heard all
about him . . . no thanks . . . . besides I am currently in a relationship
with Luke . . . Luke in fact is the person who told me all about Curt and
we both laughed hilariously about when Luke peeed in Curt's hat and stole
his calculator . . apparently Luke was the janitor in the same building
where Curt had a little cubicle near rubbish bins or something like that"

NY Barbells used to have a store on the island - don't know if they
still do but it might be worth asking. I never visited it but they did
tell me about it. Something tells me it's not there any longer, though.
