do you try and eat anything specific before a workout, and at a
specific amount of time before?

I've been reading that a protein shake immediately after a workout
mixed with some carbs is a good idea.

don't worry about eating right before a workout unless you're really
really hungry. then, maybe an apple or some fruit or something light.
a shake after your workout is good if you're specifically trying to
gain mass and strength.

it also depends on what time of the day you're working out at. some
people like to go into the gym on an empty stomach in the morning.

if you're getting at least two big meals a day, you should have plenty
of nutrients in your system before your workout.

some bodybuilders will do the 5-6 meals per day thing, but i never
found that to be beneficial personally. (and, do you really want to
obsess over calories like a 400 lb woman with a calorie counting book
in her fist?)

30 minutes before a workout, a banana/whey/whole milk powder shake.

30 minutes after, same thing.

2 hours before, six sandwiches with 6 eggs.

And before.

And during.

However, during the workout i drink generic energy drinks, with caffeine and
taurine.
