are they nearly as effective as barbell squats? .. im figuring its much
more safer to do dumbell squats without a spotter

Nice alternative, especially if you use dumbells heavy enough, but they are
more like deadlifts than squats, that is if you use them by hanging them to
your side.

Alternate with lunges and step-ups and you'll get some good squatting done.
This is what I did before switching to a gym where I could use a barbell to
squat and deadlift. I still do dumbbell lunges though.

Better than straps are hooks. I bought some "hookers" (not the fun kind
either) from bodybuilding.com. The hook holds onto the weight just fine and
it's easier than dealing with straps, IMHO.
