Hi Gang:

I have a few target areas that I want to loose fat in: stomach, hips, lower
back and a few other places.

My arms are fairly cut, same with my legs.

Question:
If I want to loose fat in my stomach, do I do situps? If I want to drop fat
in my lower back, do target that area with weights?

My understanding is that to build muscle you burn calories and fat.
I would think that it wouldn't mater what area you target because fat will
be lost regardless.

However, my arms and legs are pretty muscular yet they have no fat, which
leads me to believe that to drop fat in a certain area you need to build
muscle in that area.

That's a very typical pattern.

That's also very typical. Most men have to get pretty fat before
their body starts depositing fat on their arms an legs.

Unfortunately it is not really possible to achieve "spot reduction" of
fat without liposuction. Instead your body takes off fat in the
reverse order that it put it on. For example, if you are like me you
first got a bit of a belly, then some love handles, etc. When you
start losing fat the fat will come off in the reverse order.

Situps are a pretty good exercise, but if the first place that you put
on weight was your stomach you won't see your abs until you have shed
the fat everywhere else.

Over the long term it is difficult to both add muscle and lose fat at
the same time, but it can be done. You have the basic idea, though.
The trick is to add lean body mass while losing body fat.

It doesn't really work that way. Your body type just doesn't deposit
fat on your arms an legs unless you add more weight. However, adding
more muscle is always a good idea Smile.

Spot reduction is a myth...

Fat is burned over the entire body in the usual manner.

Eat less and move more. Wink

Sorry!!!

You can build muscle in specific areas with specific weight exercises,
but fat is burned body wide. It's a physiological fact.

Building muscle in a specified area will tone it up certainly, making it
look better, but loosing fat is all around. Eat less calories than you
burn...

To my knowledge there is not way to lose fat in a particular spot only,
other than lipposuccion that is..

Fat in the stomach and lower back are signs of insulin resistance. You
may not be diabetic; but, extra carbs when not burned are stored in
those areas. Sit ups will help. However the best thing you can do is
stay away from the complex or refined carbohydrates and sugar.

And a lot depends on the shape of the container too. Crisco tins don't
fly well at all, but cylindrical containers can be very accurate.

Why is that the best thing to do?

I will have to search for references. two easy sites are Drmirkin.com
or healthy talkradio.com. There are lots of referenced articles.

Sit ups will help just for the fact that it will strengthen your core
and help displace some of the fat in your stomach. In other words it
is not going to be the best way to spot reduce fat but it cant hurt.

simple sugars and refined carbs will spike you insulin. The body can't
use it all and will store the rest as fat. There are carbohydrates
that wont cause such a spike in insulin. Some suggestions would be
oats, sweet potatos, and brown rice.

I don't think you'll find a reference for what you stated. I don't
know if your reference to "stomach" meant "belly" or the actual
"stomach" organ, but in any event, the lower back statement is not
accurate. Lower back fat is subcutaneous; so is the "spare tire" fat
around your belly. Fat that gives you a "pot belly" is visceral fat,
i.e., fat around your internal organs. Large depots of visceral fat
are indicative of insulin resistance; subcutaneous fat is not.

And yes, I can provide a recent reference:

action in adipose tissue: insights from in vivo and in vitro studies.

There's that "stomach" thing again. Doesn't matter. Sit ups won't do
that. They will strengthen your rectus abdominus and your hip
flexors, but aside from a burning a few (very few) calories, they
won't do anything to metabolize fat in that specific area. And it
definitely won't "displace" abdominal fat.

Except that after heavy resistance training, you *want* an insulin
spike, in conjunction with an infusion of essential amino acids from
protein, to potentiate muscle protein synthesis. The "no simple
sugars" advice is overly simplistic.
