| Recently I bought a pedometer for walking. I've put on over 10,000
steps per day for the past 5 days. This is in addition to 6 sets of
tennis. After the 5 days, my weight increased from 177 to 178. And I
eat just two modest meals a day. What's going on? Perhaps walking
causes weight loss only if you are very overweight and not exercising at
all.

I walked 3 miles a day, 5 days a week, for 2 years without losing any
weight. Then it happened. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and
a water pill was prescribed. Presto.....lost 10 pounds in one week.

You are very diligent to persevere for 2 years without losing any
weight. If a water pill caused the sudden weight loss, wasn't it only
temporary loss of water and gained back quickly? Thanks for responding.

Well I wasn't only doing it to lose weight. Walking will exercise your
heart and lungs and make you feel better overall. Also you will
tone your buttocks and hips. Your calfs and thighs will be more muscular.

Maybe I left the wrong impression. I wasn't prescribed just one water
pill. I will be taking them forever. Water pills are diuretics which
increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose
water and salt. The pill is not a cure. It lowers blood pressure and
helps to manage it. It also reduces the swelling and water retention
caused by various medical conditions, such as heart, liver or kidney
disease.

Your weight changes hour by hour for a variety of reasons (hydration level,
food consumption, bowel movements, menstrual period, etc.). Because of
these natural fluctuations, you can't draw any conclusions about whether or
not you're losing weight from two weigh-ins taken 5 days apart.
The good news is, you're walking a lot, and watching what you eat. Keep
doing that, and the weight should start to come off. But, don't make the
mistake of feeling elated when the scale shows 1 lb less, or depressed when
it shows 1 lb more. Day to day variations of 1-3 lbs are common, and don't
mean much of anything.
It's the longer term trend that's most important, and it sounds like you're
on the right track with regards to eating and exercise. Patience and
persistence...

Not necessarily you had gained weight it could be muscle too. If you
are not satistied of walking why don't you run instead. Start slowly,
try how much you can do. If you are playing tennis I am sure you can
handle running instead of walking. >> Stay informed about: walking =weight loss? |

ALSO!! Muscle weighs MORE than fat, thus as you walk and your physical
conditioning improves, (muscle tone) you may weigh more, but you are in
better physical shape. Hint: concentrate more on inches rather than
pounds.

2 meals a day doesn't seem very smart for an active person. I think most
would say many smaller meals throughout a day is wiser. Sometimes when you
aren't losing and are active it is because you are not eating enough. Active
people need more cals a day.
Walking is just like any other exercise, so your last statement is
confounding. >> Stay informed about: walking =weight loss? |
