currently 180lbs, ~16%body fat- looking to knock it down to ~11%-12%-
about 170-172 lbs. i read that w/ the stillman diet, you can lose
7-15lbs in the first week, about 5lbs per week after. assuming you
keep working out, about how much of that weight is fat, how much
muscle, water, etc? what about lyle's modified whatchamacallit?

You're going to lose muscle, no matter what. A protein-sparing diet
like the Stillman Diet reduces muscle loss. The current
protein-sparing modified fasts include a lot of fiber to deal with the
constipation that was common with the Stillman Diet.

But you're still going to lose lean body mass, and as body fat levels
decrease, the more the body will derive it's energy from muscle.

yar, i know you pretty much always lose lean body mass when dieting-
just wondering how well this preserves lean mass. i.e. if i do this
for 2 weeks and knock off 8-10 lbs, how much of it can i realistically
expect to be fat loss?

I have never heard of it, but at that rate, i am willing to bet its all
water, your muscle size/strength will decrease, and as a result, the % of
fat goes UP, despite losing those pounds...

I googled it.
You won't lose muscle as it's a pure protein, fat free diet.

It's a bit extreme tho'. Wink

The Stillman diet is like Atkins without the fat (and with more water).

It's mostly water; figure the first week is all water, and you'll gain
5-10 lbs as soon as you start eating carbs.

You're much better off with LD2.0.

That's guesswork. My guess is about 60%.

How is that possible?
I mean, with an avarage of 10 pounds the first week, and 5 thereafter?

I really have reasons to assume that high protein diets dont "protect"
muscle tissue if you get zero carbs and fat.

That should have read "you won't lose as much muscle".

A lot of the first ten pounds that first week is water weight due to
glycogen depletion in the muscles.

I'm pretty good about low carbing most of the time but when I do
"cheat", even something as little as a couple of slices of bread to make
a sandwich, or a sweet potato or, say, a bowl of rice, I gain 5 lbs.
overnight and the muscles in my arms get really hard due to the glycogen
production and water increase in the muscle tissue.

That's what carb depletion and carbing up prior to body building
competition is all about. Smile

I can get rid of most of the sudden weight gain in a couple of days by
being really strict, and taking Torosemide. I have a prescription.

People equate 'lean body mass' to just muscle but its not. The lean
part is composed of water, muscle, bone, organ tissue, blood, and
everything else besides bodyfat. Anyone who has a considerable amount
of scale weight to lose needs to realistically lose some 'lean' weight
to restructure their body composition. The key is to keep the lean loss
to a minimum and the fatloss the higher percentage. For example, losing
30lbs scale weight one might lose 20lbs fat and 10lbs lean - if you
know your bodyfat percentage you can keep track of this exchange to
make sure you are on the right track. A bit of math:

A lot of that depends on water intake. I drink about 1 gallon per day.
If you retain most of it.......

1 lb. per pint.

5 lbs. is not that much in the grand scheme of things. Wink
I remember Cohen saying he gained more than that after a carb pigout
during a course of PSMF dieting.
