I live in the state of Washington, where it rains a lot especially in
the winter. I can't walk for any length of time until later in the
evening after I get home from work. Does anyone else walk after dark?
I usually walk the quiet and safe streets in my neighborhood. I would
appreciate any tips re safety and clothing. I know that I should talk
against the car traffic and wear a blinking red light attached to my
clothes. >> Stay informed about: Walking on cold rainy winter evenings |

I wear a small LED flashlight (Gerber Infinity Ultra) on a lanyard around
my neck. It runs on a single AA battery and is bright enough so I can see
the road directly in front of me. One battery will last for several
hours at full brightness:

Besides carrying a flashlight and WALKing against the traffic (not TALKing,
Fruedian slip?! ), I also have a small FLASHING red light, typically
runs on a AA battery. A steady light isn't seen as well by drivings as a
red flashing one. Typically, I'll attach it to my waste or shirt pocket.

Wear bright clothes if you can. Vest. Hat. Scarf. Jacket. Whatever you can
manage. You can probably find a bright yellow Goretex jacket or 3/4 coat to
wear as top layer.
The easier you make it for cars to see you, the better. I do this even in
the city when I'm walking in a regular residential neighborhood -- on the
sidewalk -- & I'm crossing at 4-way stop sign intersections or with traffic
lights. Even when it's not bad weather.
That way, even if I do get hit, they can't say "but she was invisible!".

I dirve to work in the early morning hours when it is dark or foggy.
There are several people in and/or on the streets walking or on bicycles
without any reflectors or lights. They are difficult to see.
I would suggest getting some red or bright yellow velcro reflector
material and sewing or attaching it down the sides of your pants and
outer sleeves and a big block across the back.
At the very least wear one of those reflector belts.
NB has shoes that have reflective material which are very helpful.
For runners and drivers, it is not a question or you being able to see
(drivers without headlights on....groan) as it is of you being seen.
Good luck. Stay safe.

And don't wear earphones -- be aware of what's going on around you!

Great point. It can be suicide to wear headphones in public!

I walk with my dog. He's not a very large dog but I have found that
people will leave me alone and give us a wide berth. My dog isn't
menacing or agressive - but other people don't know that. I know that
my dog isn't going to be able to protect me from everything but he does
provide a certain amount of protection and/or peace of mind.

I also wear one of those headlights with the elastic band. I has white LED
lights, or Red. I usually use the red, since I'm walking against the
traffic.

Wearing really bright clothes helps too. More than just one of those
"roadwork" vests, if possible! It is possible to get bright-colored
rain or cold-weater gear, but it can take some looking around.
