Post subject: book suggestion needed..
Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

I am a lawyer who just got fascinated by reading many general health
books like burn the fat, feed the muscle, weightlifting enclyopedia,
science of sports training, jumping into plyometrics but never
understood them properly why they work or could make a proper program
design. I have never read any book on bodily functions etc. & would
like to learn about it in my casual time and need a starting point.
In fact, one of my long term goal would be also to be able to design
beginning programs depending on person needs. (non-athelete or special
cases)
I narrowed down few books which I think might be a good starting point
for me.
Physiology of Sport and Exercise
Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition, and Human Performance
Nsca's Essentials of Personal Training
Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning

But I can't purchase all of them at the moment. Kindly suggest 1 or 2
books from either those above or from your side which will help me as a
starting point. I would be glad if you could help me out.

You get some training in designing programs if you take the NSCA
Certified Personal Trainer course. You can also buy their self-study
materials, which include but are not limited to one of the books you
mention, and take the test whenever you're ready.

But I think we need to put this whole process into perspective. For 99%
of the population, you will get better results sticking with one of a
few basic, tried and true approaches rather than anything
custom-designed. I think that's worth repeating - most custom-designed
programs aren't as good as the basic programs that are already out
there. People who need specialized program should consult expert,
experienced trainers with specific expertise and experience with
athletes in their chosen sport. Everyone else ought to just follow a
basic program, e.g., squat, bench and deadlift each twice a week for
strength and size (or another similarly simple schedule), or swing a
kettlebell for lean strength and conditioning, plus practice your chosen
sport diligently if you have a goal outside of general "fitness." More
is not only not needed, it's almost always messed up by the trainer
designing the program, and, no disrespect intended to you, there's
nothing to suggest you'd be any better than most people.

It's something of a running joke here that I have a couple of personal
trainer certifications but I refuse to do personal training. All I'm
willing to do is help people with their form on various lifts from time
to time, show them different exercises that may be helpful to them, and
make them aware of training schedule options I've heard of that I know
work. I don't do more than that because I think most people are best
off learning to listen to their bodies, keep a training journal, and
figuring out for themselves what works and doesn't work.

Last but not least, I recommend you add Pavel Tsatsouline's, "Power To
The People!" to your reading list - http://www.kbnj.com/ptp.htm for more
on this book.

Just my opinion.
