Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

Does anyone know where to find a barbell with the following specs.

solid steel, 1-piece.
7 ft long.
2 inch dia grip.
1 inch dia ends (this is the hard part)
ideally non-threaded ends.

Reason is I like the 2 inch grip, but want to be able to use the standard
non-olympic weights. My wife and 14 y.o. son and I lift together. They
have their own 1 inch barbells. It's nice to be able to share the weights.
I don't anticipate lifting more than about 200 lb max (and that's a
stretch), and only benching 120 lb now.

I actually saw a used barbell today that meets the above specs except it
was a 2-piece (threaded collar in the center) and threaded ends. Otherwise
I would not have thought 2 inch grip with 1 inch ends existed at all. It
was only $20. Not too keen on the two peice though. Any thoughts on 2-
piece barbells?

Thanks for any leads,

Paul S.

fractionalplates.com has several interesting BBs (not cheap) including
the Ironhorse THOR
$199.75
Thick Wall Stainless Steel 2" Grip X 7'-2 1/2" Olympic or
Standard Barbell
1" standard sleeves $35

I own the Ironhorse Rocky dumbbell - 1.5" grip diameter and 18" long
and am very satisfied with it.

Thanks for the lead. I should have added to my spec: < $50 !
Also, I'm not sure now if I really meant a 2 inch grip. I was thinking
the olympic bars that come with the $300 sets that you see in retail
sports stores were 2" grips. Maybe they're 1 3/8.

That's a really nice site by the way. I wish cap barbell gave even a
fraction of that info on their site. Guess it goes with the low profit
margin.

I was in pretty much the same position...
my cheap yet effective solution

Go to Home depot or Lowes and buy the following
1" black pipe cut to 5 or 6 feet and threaded both ends
-
2 pieces of 3/4 inch black pipe about 12 to 18 inches long
threaded 1 end only (or buy a 2 or 3 foot piece and hacksaw in half)
(don't have home depot cut them with its rotating machine .... it will
make a "bump" at the end which will interfere with the plates fitting)
-
2 reducing couplings 1 inch to 3/4 inch
---------------
Put a coupling at each end of the big pipe ... then a small piece in
each coupling ... tighten well ... you are done --- for under $20.
---------------
The outside dia of 1" pipe is 1 and 3/8 which is the most ergonomic
for many people - I believe this is what you were looking for.

3/4 inch pipe is about 1.1 inches outside dia ... this will fit MOST
standard plates, but not all ... take some plates along and check the
fit. If most of your plates fit but not all, you can open up the
offending plates a bit with a grinding wheel on a drill ...

Standard spring clips will not quite fit on the 3/4 pipe as is,
however they fit after being "opened" a bit with pliers.

My bar as made this way is plenty strong for 400 lb deadlifts,
but has bent at times if dropped ... can be bent back to straight
though.

The only disadvantage this bar really has is that it has no knurling,
however the texture is fairly good even without it ... chalk can help
your grip if the lack of knurling becomes an issue for you.

I also drilled a1/4 inch hole at the center of the bar and some 1/8
inch holes every foot out to line up my grip more easily.

Howz this?

http://www.brutestrength.com/thick_bars.cfm

--- Economy Bars ---
Our economy bars are well made out of heavy wall pipe and will hold up
to home & small gym usage. You can load these up to well over 700lbs!

----- 2" Thick Bar: $49.99 + $15.99 Shipping -----

• CAN BE SHIPPED VIA UPS. This saves alot on the shipping cost.
• 7ft in length w/12in loading area added on the ends
• 2in diameter ( 1.9in actual )
• Weighs in at 20 lbs

Ask them if they'll customize grip and sleeve diameters. I think they
will.

Interesting website and products. I saw them somewhere a while ago and lost
their URL. These guys are exactly the kind of folks I grew up around. A
small, custom shop of unique strength gear. What is not to love?

I aprticularly like their round steel balls. They are hollow and you can
fill them up with what you want.

S - U - W - E - E - E - E - E - E - E - T!!

Thanks for pointing these folks out to us.
