Be advised that both wide and close grips are associated with shoulder
problems on the bench press. None other than Robert Kennedy's own
booklet on shoulder injuries warns against them! (Side note: muscle
mags are so funny...they'll even contradict themselves in the very
same article! An old issue of Kennedy's Muscle Mag International, for
example, had a feature on how to do the bench press properly and the
lead photo, which introduced the article and took up a whole page,
shows the model breaking the proper form described in the article!)

Because you're a newbie (Tod, I mean; not addressing Pete, exactly,
though I am responding to his thoughts), be advised that dips help
with the chest only if you lean forward while performing them, as
opposed to straight up and down, which isolates the triceps. You'll
probably find that out for yourself, though, while performing the
exercise, but I thought I'd just give you a heads-up on it.
Also, with flyes, be careful not to stretch your joints much: keep a
good (and not just "slight") bend in your elbows, and avoid any
possible rotator cuff issues by not having the elbows too far past the
shoulders.
Of course, YMMV -- some folks have more flexible joints, others have
stronger joints (that is, stronger tendons there), some don't use
heavy-enough weights for it to be an issue...etc.

Its a multi joint movement, so you cannot isolate them by defenition.
And when it comes to hit the pecs, its more a matter of getting deep enough.
The pecs stretch out, and they have contract very hard to get out of that
position. You really dont have to lean forward.

I should have said "better isolate."

Leaning forward helps, in my experience. I suppose a wider "grip,"
where available (hands further apart from one another across the
torso, if you're doing it between two chairs, for instance), helps
target the pecs better without a lean forward...but on something like
parallel bars, leaning forward places more emphasis on the pecs.

I wonder, though...how the heck could you "psych out" someone in a
bodybuilding contest?? I mean, Jesus, what fragile egos! If all it
takes is to tell someone "oh you look too fat" or "you need to add
more mass" or hide someone's shirt (all this from the "Pumping Iron"
movie)...

It's probably taken for granted in Hollywood -- all those aspiring
starlets paying their dues on the casting couch, you see...but in
politics everything comes out.

Reagan had more competent advisors, is all.

I'm really surprised to hear that over and over again...he's the one
that started bankrupting the country (doesn't matter that he spent it
on so-called defense build-up -- he had the country owing the
Japanese, the way the country now owes the Chinese [T-Bills and
such])...no more Californians, please!!

Most of that was bullshit. Waller's hiding of the shirt had nothing
whatsoever to do with the outcome of the Universe. Katz, as Waller
said in the film, looked like a big spider. Arms didn't match his
enormous chest, etc. Just wasn't the man to beat Waller. Likewise,
Louie just wasn't the man to beat Arnold. I doubt very much that Serge
Nubret was intimidated or psyched out by anything Arnold might have
done in that contest.
Otoh, Arnold's shenanigans worked successfully in at least one contest
if what I read was correct. Which Olympia contest was it where Arnold
had the judges move the venue to a different back drop - a dark brown
back drop where Sergio Oliva would blend right in rather than being
seen especially well? Also, was that the same contest where Arnold
leaned over and said something like, "I'm done. This is exhausting.
Let's leave the stage," and Sergio agreed and trudged off while Arnold
remained to hit several more poses - giving the impression that Sergio
had declared Arnold the winner?
And certainly the 1980 Olympia was an example of all of his
competitors being, in effect, Punk'd. I mean, wtf! That may have been
a psycho out, actually. Imagine competing against a multiple Olympia
winner who'd seen every kind of success in bodybuilding, retired a
champion, and then got in at least reasonable shape in a minimum
amount of time. That's gotta rattle a cage.

Okay.

I'll take your word for it. Certainly Dubya has screwed the pooch in
more than one area during his time in office.
