Hi All,

Pardon my newbieness. I've been using weight training to improve
health and muscle strength. I've been at it long enough to see and
feel the results. It took awhile to think that all my effort was doing
anything. The best change I've made so far is to increase my reps from
10 to 20. Ten reps was like a waste of time. However, 20 reps do the
trick.

I don't seem to be getting the results I expect from the bench press.
This is supposed to be a chest exercise, but I feel like I'm getting a
bicep work out instead. I've tried a wider grip, more narrow grip,
adjusting the weight. I should feel some kind of tension in the chest,
maybe some soreness. But nothing. Instead my arms get tired just
trying to feel something in the chest.

So.. where am I going wrong? Should I be doing something else to get
to these muscles?

Any advice appreciated.

<sigh> You can start by telling us your age, height, weight, bodyfat
percentage if you know it, and what sort of weight you're using for your
20 reps.

I'd make him start by explaining how benching is tiring his bicep (sic).

The bench works the pecs, delts and triceps. What you feel is really
more a matter of where you are weak. It sounds like your triceps are
tiring and either you think it is your biceps or your biceps are
straining slightly during the eccentric lowering or by supporting the
position as your triceps tire.

Either way, if you want develop those areas keep benching. I don't know
why 20 reps is the goal - that makes the set more of an endurance or
strength/endurance thing than hypertrophy. The generally accepted range
for hypertrophy is from 6-12.

Your reps are way too high. 5-8 is the rep range you want to be working
in for strength and size. Right now you're working on anaerobic
endurance. You need to be slowly progressing with the weight you're
using and training consistently 2-3 times per week. It sounds like you
need to do some reading. Try 'Beyond Brawn' by Stuart McRobert for a
foundation.

Ari

I wonder if he's got his arms spread too far, like he was halfway to a
flye; that would put the biceps under isometric tension, which he'd feel.
But he says he's played with grip, so i guess it's not that.

Note to OP;

All the above parameters have NOTHING to do with your problem...

Give the wide grip another try.

Press 2/3 of the way up, lower slowly, stop and inch or so before hitting
the chest, and press back up.

Add dips and flyes.

(rolls eyes)

Come ON, Cohen! He's OBVIOUSLY only using one arm. And, of course, his
bench is like that other guy's interpretation of a squat which, uh,
iirc, was actually a deadlift.

Anyway, was me, I'd make him start by explaining if it's actually
benching he's doing.

tod: "I thought curls worked your chest and so was surprised that I
felt it in my arms. Now I know that what I thought was a bench was
really a single dumbbell curl, hence feeling it in my one bicep."

Or not.

And tod makes me think of that one joke:

"I am sofa king we tod id."

Uh, not you specifically, tod, the word is all. Ahem. Actually, I
don't really see what's so funny about living room furniture, but,
hey, that's me.

(grabs MOSSEL BUILTING work book)

That's to keep constant tension on the pecs by avoiding the tricep
lock-out?

I always remember Arnold's "like hugging a tree" flyes advice. Wait,
adviceS!

Yes.

And to avoid to much work from the tris.

Ha! Yes.

Just picked up a copy of Columbu's "Winning Bodybuilding" which I
originally purchased back in the late '70s. There was an eBay auction
and I was the winning bidder. (ooooh aaaah)

That diabolical Arnold, giving Franco those wrong advices.

Wide grips are one of those "tricks" to reach pectoral muscles when its
seems difficult to reach them in the first place.

Problem is, too wide and you lose leverage. Too narow and some guys end up
workind tri/delts.
A wide grip forces your elbows directly to the sides, which in turn forces
your pectoral muscles to contract hard to get that weight up.

But in the first few weeks or so, you have to sacrifice weight.
