If I'm using something like whey protein from GNC to help with my weight
lifting for muscle mass, will I also gain fat at the same time from using
the whey protein?

I just finally got most the fat off and I've lost a lot of muscle in the
process. I'm a skinny rail, and the last thing I want to be is a fat pot
bellied rail. Last time I took the stuff I had a lot of weight gain. maybe
the milk? or what? I was also taking creatinine, but I'm not sure if that
stuff is any good. The only supplement I'm taking now is CLA.

Thanks.

Only if you ingest more calories per day than you use.

Use skim milk or water. Use only regular whey protein powder and not a
'weight gainer' formulas. Dont drink it as a side drink to a meal, use
it to replace a meal.

Creatine is one of the few proven supplements that does what it
supposed to do (hydrate your muscle cells) whereas CLA makes buff mice
& chickens but in humans it is not proven to do much. Go back to the
creatine.

Interesting. So, let's say my maintenance caloric level is 3000
calories a day, and I eat 4000 calories a day of whey protein, I won't
gain any fat?

Eating fat makes you fat, eating lean makes you lean?

You should write a book.

If you are in a significant calorie surplus, you will gain fat.

You'll need to eat 15% more calories per day than you are
expending (in exercise and BMR and normal activity) to
induce muscular anabolism. Whether that 15% shows up as
muscle or fat or a combination of both will be determined
by your workout, genetics, metabolic stability, food
composition, food timing, hormones, supplements, steroids,
cosmetic surgery, pregnancy, etc.

The usual program is to just do it, accept that you'll
gain some fat along with the muscle (expect about 0.5
lb/week muscle gain and 1.0 lb/week total weight gain for
a 500-calorie surplus and an hour a day weightroom workout)
and then have to do a controlled fat-cutting program after
you've bulked up to where you think your muscles are big
enough or your fat is too thick to look at.

If you're eating just enough calories and enough protein
and you're working out, you probably won't remain low in
muscle while gaining lots of fat.

But if it left your belly last, that's where it will
appear first.

That's just the way bodies work.

Whey is the ultimate protein in terms of bioavailability (around 100)
and content of essential amino acids, which the body needs on a daily
basis to promote a healthy body and assist in maintaining muscle tone.
Whey protein is a by-product of cheese making, which has been
concentrated and purified by a filtration process to yield a high
purity protein product, that is both natural and pure without any added
preservatives.

I have the same issue, in that I have fat around the belly, I'm just gonna
up the cardio til it comes off. When its off, eat shed loads and back to
more intense weight work - rinse repeat Wink

Whey protein itself wouldnt give you fat gain. Theres no fat or very minimal
fat in the powder. Weight gain is to be expected with protein powder if
youre working out, but that should hopefully be muscle and if its fat youre
putting on I'd suggest that its something else youre consuming.
As for Creatine, Ive just recently started taking it. Im not sure of the
exact science, i mean ive read all up on it, but in simple, Creatine allows
your body during a workout to replenish the ATP much more efficiently.
Its mainly of benefit to people into strength workout rather than endurance.
Creatine allows the fast twitch muscle fibres to grow much more rapidly.
Some say it has no benefit to people but the amount of creatine a person has
varies, ie vegetarians have very little body creatine as red meat is the
main source, so therefore those steak eaters would have alot anyway.
Thats my 2 cents worth, I hope it atleast gives you something to think
about.

Proteins comprise carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen.
Fats comprise carbon, hydrogen, oxygen.

Of course you can get fat eating protein.

You need carbs along with protein or you're wasting
the protein. And if the protein shake is in addition to
protein in real food in the same meal, it's still going
to work.

Water hydrates your muscle cells. Overloading on creatine
adds more creatine to your muscle cells. But eating meat
and fish will do that, too. So eating meat and fish and
then overloading on creatine powders won't do much more
than give you a nice placebo effect.

Protein powders sometimes come with creatine supplements
mixed in.

Go for it, but don't just eat shed loads.

Eat only 15% more than maintenance. (Requires you to
spend a few weeks determining what your maintenance-calorie
level is.)

Keep your diet clean. Don't eat fat and sugar together,
don't eat high-glycemic foods by themselves, and don't
eat a lot of bad-fat fats. I.e., anabolism is not an
excuse to return to a bad diet.

Make most of the excess calories complex carbs.

Eat 5 or 6 meals a day, to keep your protein load and blood
sugar consistent (the former keeps your muscles growing,
and the latter keeps insulin down which keeps the lipids
from being stored in adipose tissue).
