After leaving the YMCA recently because of Bush's 'refugees' and
'hard workers' spitting, coughing up phlegm, picking their noses and
urinating in the pool I joined another local gym with a pool. Hoping
to supplement my workout with swimming there...but to my chagrin there
were Children and Adults using the pool for games. The other 3 lanes
were always busy with the head boppers and their 6 hour swims. I
generally use the lane for 10 minutes doing sprints. I asked the
clerks at the front desk as to why the pool is more of a swim club
than a health club without any resolution.

Therefore a Gym is a waste of time, money and these days, gas. At
home I have an old but still functional bench where one can do in/
declines as well as leg curls and extensions. And a decent set of
dumbells: 1 set of 20, 40 and 60 lbs respectively as well as an
adjustable set with 120 lbs total. I also have one of those cardio
leg thingy machines that uses air pressure. I prefer a brisk walk
though up and down hills to mimic what Mother Nature intended.

Anyway, I'm looking for a comprehensive somewhat vigorous workout that
uses dumbells only. Perhaps working each part 2 days a week. At 47,
my goal is more or less something between toning up, losing weight and
formal bodybuilding. Perhaps the cliché "swimmer's body" would best
describe my goal.

Thanks,

Keith

I'd make a standing, one-armed overhead dumbbell press a key element of
your workouts. When you're done pressing them, swing them. Here's a
good link for you:

http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/budget.html

I'd also consider adding more equipment - needn't be fancy, but a 4' x
6' x 3/4" rubber mat plus a 300 lb. Olympic barbell set would let you
deadlift, at a cost of around $200. Add a kettlebell starter kit - you
can see my site for more about that, and these go for about $150 - and
you'll never run out of things to do.

Why the cross-post to some completely unrelated newsgroup?

I could buy a barbell and use the weights I have now. A lot of good
information
from the website. Thanks.

Americans are being forced out of Gyms by illegal aliens. A whole
bunch of
Americans left the YMCA because of the swimming pool events I
mentioned as
well as forcing American patrons to listen to Spanish music and
causing actually fighting as well
as using machines and 'saving' them for other Hispanics only.

What was Your previous resistance workout?
There are not many exercises that can not be done with dumbbells.
Squats, deadlift, even power clean, can all be done with dumbbells.
There are several books on exactly this subject...
