Pavel's "Power To The People!" should be on any strength- or
weight-training-related list.

Another peer-review poooooBAH! God bless the scientists, but I wonder
what Vince Gironda would say to that? Or Bradley J. Steiner? How about
Stuart McRobert? Are those guys all about the science? Are they? Heck,
I don't know. But their writing always seemed common sensical to me.
Just writing from experience. /I'm/ all about the anectdote.

I have it, but I don't know if I agree with that.
Zatsiorsky's "Science and Practice of Strength Training" has far more
information of the same nature.
Siff and Verkhoshanskey 'Supertraining' - has pretty much every bit of
info you can imagine, but it is not an easy read. Also interesting to
get Siff's "Facts and Fallacies" book and read what he has to say abour
Chu's book on Plyometrics. Or a number of other books.
IMO PTTP is more like a good pamphlet on training for strength.
Interesting programs, fun read, but not much science in terms of 'why'
this works.

I'm not into bodybuilding at all - so I consider those three pretty much
useless. Much like I view bodybuilding.

"Why" isn't the only measure of value of a text. I know you know that, but
a book's value is different to different people. I cannot think of a better
introduction to weight lifting than PTP - it provides enough "why" to
interest many non-lifters - that is but one among its many virtues.

I read your response, shrugged and went about my business.
Bodybuilding's not for everyone.
As a teen I was a dyed-in-the-wool fan, you just can't compare today's
monsters with the lines of a Robbie Robinson, Ed Corney, or Frank Zane.
Even Arnold looks /human/ in '75 compared to some of the guys competing
today.
Still, of the three authors I mentioned, Vince Gironda is the only one
who was truly about the pretty boy stuff. Steiner and McRobert both
promoted the big three of squat, bench, and deadlift.

Zatsiosky's text has about 20 times the amount of information with far
more practical applications of weight training. Supertraining has almost
infinitely more info, but is a very daunting read.
