Strength training will cause you to build more muscle mass and increase muscular strength. This will cause your body composition to change, and if you burn enough calories during your workouts, you can lose fat through strength training. However, losing fat is also a function of caloric intake. Therefore, strength training along with good diet and appropriate cardiovascular workouts will be the most effective in losing fat mass. According to Matt Brzycki in his book, "A practical approach to strength training", during exercise, energy stores are drawn from all over the body as a source of fuel (pg.199). This means that you can burn calories from fat, but the fat will not be from the specific muscle group or area you are lifting. Therefore, you cannot spot train or target a specific area for fat loss (i.e. stomach) when you strength train. You will, however, be burning overall calories and fat from the entire body.
I hope this answers your question!!

Thanks for your very thoughtful reply! So should I quit cardiovacular training and focus exclusively on strength training then?

Strength training and cardiovascular training are both very important in their own ways. Strength training increases muscle mass, increases bone mass and density, and makes your body stronger overall. Cardiovascular training is very important for heart health, and has the added benefit of increased caloric consumption. Both modes of exercise are very important and should be incorporated into every exercise program. Matt Brzycki recommends strength training 2-3 times per week. on non-consecutive days. It is also recommended that individuals perform cardiovascular exercise anywhere from 3-5 times per week, for at least 20 minutes per session.

The incorporation of both modes of exercise will provide you with the most health and wellness benefits!

No, you want to continue with a balance program between strength training, flexibility and cardiovascular workouts. Cardio is very important to heart and respiratory health. Also, cardio can help you to lose weight quicker then strength training alone. The key is to have a balanced workout and to not focus just on one area of training. It is also important to integrate flexibilty into you workout. Flexibility is very important in decreasing the risk of injury according to Travis Brown MS,CSCS in the article Core Flexibility.

Thanks cm parsons and jm casagranda, that's very helpful. My best friend Butch told me that when I stretch, i need to bounce in order to elongate the fascia and optimize the stretch. It's not real comfortable to bounce, but i've been doing it anyway. What do you think?

In reguards to stretching Butch is incorrect in telling you to bounce when you stretch. Ballistic stretching is dangerous and can cause injury. It is much better if you hold a strecth rather then to bounce .

Shocked With all respect to your pal Butch, he may want to give you advice concerning other facets of your life instead of stretching techniques. The "bouncing" technique your referring to can be dangerous. You may overstretch the desired muscle and put unnecessary strain on ligaments and tendons. A more controlled longer stretch may save you valuable time off the couch . Stretch to pain, but if it is hurting unbearably your not doing yourself any good. Because the topic of stretching is as highly debated as an argument over the best tasting beer, i will not cite one of the millions of articles referring to the best possible way to stretch. However, I will tell you that Butch may be pointing you down the road to injury, and only through antecdotal experience will you be able to judge what works best for you. Lastly, listen to your body. Of course everyone has variable pain tolerances, but If it becomes too uncomfortable your body most likely is telling you to ease off or stop the stretch entirely.
