How are the two moves different, in terms of what body parts are

Not sure but for some odd reason, lunges make my knees hurt and squats
don't.

I don't do lunges any more.....

Lunges place more concentration on quadriceps. They are not the most
effective exercise for that purpose, and if you use sufficient weight
to make them more effective, they are also more risky.

Do squats. If you want to concentrate more on quadriceps, do front
squats.
