Dear All
In terms of muscles used is there a difference between a dead lift and
a squat.
My intention is to become stronger, i.e it is not for any competition,
I have no issues with the main compound excercises other than the
squat.
The reason being is that whenever I try and do a squat there are
issues that I am not happy with.
For instance i fear that it may cause an injury to my wrist and I feel
off balance throughout. I have tried boards but it doesnt help.
regards

Yes. Deadlift uses more muscles, for example.

Deadlift is probably a better choice. Just be anal about form, because
with this lift you can lift a bit more with bad form, but the price you
pay for it is lower back stress. Also do remember, that lowering the
weight is not an exact reversal of a lifting phase. Most deadlift
injuries happen during lowering phase, when you are more tired and less
concentrated, so bear it in mind.

You may try to work on ankle flexibility, or simply do deadlifts, if
getting stronger is all you want. Deadlifts done sumo style are closer
to squats when it comes to the combinations of muscles used during the
lift. Probably slightly safer for lower back too, for most people.

Thanks Andrzej
I normally dead lift using the sumo stance, less strain on the knees.
I have strain my back before and just as you said it was on the
lowering stage just like alot of things you are wise after the event.
