I've recently started doing a split routine (lower body on Mon. and
Thurs. and upper body on Teus. and Fri, Wed. Cardio only plus abs and
arms) so have been able to force myself to start lifting heavier lately.
I was doing variations on full body 5 days per week with a break on
weekends only, mainly in the interest of burning lots of calories...
I've added 30% more weight to my deadlift over the past couple of weeks
and yesterday, I woke up with a very sore face, right over the rear
mandible muscles on my jaws.
I've noted a couple of the powerlifting guys at my gym wearing rubber
mouth inserts to protect their teeth during clenching with heavy lifts.
They look awkward and uncomfortable, but how much damage can be done to
the teeth from hard clenching during heavy lifts? Would it be wise to
invest in a rubber mouth insert?
TIA!

There was a report that clenching your teeth made you stronger - I think
it was the mad Russian. So this is why the rubber inserts show up. As
long as you don't actually grind your teeth I think you'll be okay.

No, no grinding...
Just sore jaw muscles from a hard "workout" <lol>
About the same way my legs feel the day after a good leg trashing.....
Time will tell! Jack told me he cracked a couple of teeth, hence his
mouth insert.
But, he was a competitive powerlifter at one time. I just lift for
personal satisfaction, not competition. I'm too old for that.
Thanks!

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. You are never too old to compete at powerlifting as
long as you can break parallel in the squat and come back up with 55
pounds or more on your back. >> Stay informed about: Sore jaws from heavy deadlifts... |

The one I read said that teeth clenching reduced performance.

How? I don't see it increasing or decreasing performance myself. But the
general rule is to get as tight as you can for big lifts. I could see
teeth clenching being bad in athletics (eg 100m sprint), but not
weightlifting. I really don't see it having much affect at all. What
mechanism could it really affect? I've seen great lifters who clench and
great lifters that don't.

Ah. Time to hit google.
I was more concious of what I did yesterday and noted that I only clench
my teeth on incline presses and, apparently, deadlifts. I guess when you
are really concentrating on lifting that damned heavy barbell and
keeping the balance etc., you don't notice much else!
Not even the rap music that comes on the gym radio once in awhile. ;-P

I think it's a personal thing. Without a doubt, clenching my teeth (and
I use a mouthpiece) helps my deadlift, and back when I did calf raises,
it helped with those too. But it screws up my breathing too much to
wear a mouthpiece when squatting or benching.
For the OP, if you choose to wear a mouthpiece don't forget that you can
trim it down to make it more comfortable, since you aren't counting on
it to protect you should you take a blow to the head. I've trimmed mine
to where it only covers about 6 teeth. >> Stay informed about: Sore jaws from heavy deadlifts... |

wait...I think it was teeth clenching reduced performance but the mouth

My greatest concern was the possibility of damage to the teeth over time.
If that's not an issue, then I won't worry about it.

Cool, thanks!
I'll have to at least give it a try.
I assume I can get these either at a sporting goods store,
or someplace like Walgreens?

I recall the Mad Russian, or maybe it was one of his disciples, saying
that one ought to strive to keep tension below the neck for most lifts
most of the time. Personally, I do find clench my jaw on really heavy
deads, but not until the going gets pretty heavy, 90-95% 1RM or so. Jaw
clenching starts to fall into the "psych yourself" category for me - I
want to practice maximizing muscle tension for heavy lifts, but by the
same token I want to save the psych for the meet or the 1RM attempt.
Just my opinion...

Probably...
But, it's fun to humour them!
Cheers!
