I have just started getting into lifting after a very long time away
and was wondering about sore muscles vs tired muscles. The first week
that I started working out my muscles were very sore (no surprise)
however now they are just tired. Am I not working out hard enough or
is this normal?

Thanks

Could be anything. Diet, stress (psychological), rest/sleep and the
lack thereof...you'll need to provide more info....

Generally speaking, feeling "tired" is a sign of overtraining or not
enough food or rest. That how it was in the Army for me -- no one
works less than ten hours a day in the military, and in combat arms
when on maneuvers in the field your workdays are like sixteen,
eighteen, twenty hours straight, day after day!

So I think I know what you mean by feeling tired. You're not getting
enough rest or food or too much exercise.

It happens. Take a week off, really relax and eat right and see what
happens next.

Sore muscles are from the break down of old beat up muscle by protein
digesting enzymes. If you give your muscles a rest the new muscle
will replace the old. Doing too much volume many times is the cause
of too much soreness.

Tired muscles = tired you! Too many stress hormones being produced
will give you that tired feeling.

Try less volume, more rest, better food & you will see great results.
Take your time, 3 times per week weight training is more than enough.

I've been working out since 1980 and I don't train with weights more
than 3 times per week. I'm doing Yoga 2 times per week to loosen up
what is becoming too tight from the heavy lifting. This month I
deadlifted 485 lbs while weighing 158 lbs from a 3 time per week
workout. If I would have cut back on the volume I would have pulled
more because I hit 490 during a heavy workout the week before.

Oh, you never know, Rob! Smile

I'm busy fixing up a vintage Hayman and an old Vistalite at the
minute, but your stave shell tubs look pretty good to me!

I'm not qualified to give advice as I'm just getting back into lifting after
a long lay-off as well. However, you could probably attract more help by
posting your routine, as well as your age and general fitness level, so that
more experienced people can get a better feel for your problem. You really
didn't give enough info (No offense).

That said, I'll re-iterate the statements about (1)overtraining/or lack of
(2)rest/(3)nutrition. Most likely some combination of the three. I had a
similar probelm recently that was rectified by more *quality* rest and
better (and more) food.
