Smith Machines

Does anyone know how much weight the barbel contributes on an average in a
Smith machine? I imagine it varies from machine to machine but is there a
general trend? Do manufacturers ever/usually counter weight the bar?

Only if you weigh it.

It varies a lot.

Most commercial ones are counterweighted, and some have a net weight
as little as 15-20 pounds. The custom-made Smith machine in my gym
has no counterweight, and the bar assembly weighs 70 pounds.

I repeat: it varies a lot.
