| I realize it is somewhat off topic - why are some people referred to as
'skippy'?
It seems to be used in a derogatory sense.
Who or what is "Skippy"?
Please only genuine replies.

Well, mebbe off topic, but still relevant, at least here.
Skipping, the thing kids do in play, a variation of which Chuck Berry made
look so cool, at least w/ a guitar.
But if you skip around at too late an age, or fullfil that perception, you
probably get yer ass beat regularly, and get called Skippy.
Like what happened to jmw and brink.
Skippys were also the old tennis sneaker and I believe deck sneaker on
boats--sumpn PeeWee Herman would wear.
But note Skipp-er is deferential, marine-wise, but can also be used
sarcastically, again toward the likes of a jmw or brink.
So the two marine usages probably has its own entomology.

Not sure if this is it or not, but Skippy is cheap dog food.

I think I know!

Not necessarily.
> Who or what is "Skippy"?
"Skippy," if I'm not mistaken, is code.
> Please only genuine replies.
What? Genuine is the status quo for replies on Usenet! What do you take
newsgroup patrons for, David???
Yes, Skippy is code for "My friend, I so wish I was like you. You are
my hero and if I live long enough and experience enough then perhaps,
one day, just maybe, I, too, can be ALMOST as cool as you!"
By way of reference, see all the posts where Brink and J Dub refer to
fellow participants in this newsgroup as Skippy. I trust you'll agree
with my response.
Yes, it's obvious that "Skippy" is code, a euphemism, if you will, for
a much too long string of complimentary text.
Don't mention it. I'm glad to help you solve this mystery in as genuine
a way as possible.

The nickname Skip, precursor to Skippy, of course - derives from naming a
boy after his Grandfather - skipping a generation. So, if you're named after
your Dad, you're Junior. If you are David Whatever III, you could be
nicknamed Trey or Trip, and if your Grandpa was David but your Dad was Bob,
you're Skippy.

True. Old time sailors used to say, that one should always choose the
lesser weevil.

And it sounded helpful. (Which should have tipped me off, inasmuch as
this is MFW, that it was made up.) >> Stay informed about: Skippy |

Are you kidding?
We had it over here in the early seventies, and they dubbed in the "Skippy
Song" in Dutch!

yes I know about the bush kangaroo. But that doesn't quite explain the
