I'm getting a shooting pain from upper glutes to back of knee?

And I thought "Where better to go for medical advice than MFW eh?"
(Going to doctor next week)

It started after a 4 hour car journey. Prior to that I'd been doing
lots of DL.

I thought it was a strain at first a continued with light
exercise/cardio.

Now after talking with a mate we think its inflammation of the Sciatic
nerve, and my light excercise probably made it worse.

Anyone had this due to sitting too long in bad chairs?
(Not the one due to vertebrae damage)
What is the fastest way to get rid of it?

Will my leg die?

That's a question? Hmmm...I'll guess: yes, you are.

As MFW is now overrun with trolls, idiots, and morons, not such a good
idea.

You and your mate are correct.

Inversion therapy. Hanging upside down from the ankles on one of those
tilt table thingies.

Eventually.

Interesting because I had also recently doing a lot of high leg
kicks/ballistic stretches and controlled standing leg raises.
(with a plan to ease back into some kind of MA after a 10+ year layoff)

So this may have contributed too?

It is mighty painful. Still I think I'll get a cushion for the car seat!

The best exercise for stretching the piriformis (which, I hasten to add,
may or may not be what you need to relieve your symptoms but, as they
say, it couldn't hurt) is the windmill. There are many similar
movements that go by the name windmill - most of them do what you need.
At it's simplest, it's standing with a slightly wider than hip-width
stance and touching your one hand to the opposite foot. I find the
weighted version more effective because the weight effectively enforces
good form.

I have a page on my web site that discusses the windmill and includes a
short video clip in Real format. (Download the free Media Classic
player if you don't want to use Real's own.) The page is written with
those who have read Pavel's "Russian Kettlebell Challenge" in mind, but
it may still be of some help to you. While I feel my own form is better
now than when I made this video clip a few years ago, I think this is
good enough to demonstrate the idea. I made it a point, when
positioning myself and the camera, to have a cinder block wall behind me
so that you could see how far my hip moves back when performing this
exercise. The point of the exercise, in a nutshell, is to "push into
your hip" as you bend because that's what stretches the piriformis.

The important technical point in the performance of the windmill is that
the motion must come from the hips, both pushing back and rotating. You
must not treat the movement as a side bend but rather try to keep your
spine straight.

Me and my bad back are completely addicted to this movement. I do at
least one set every day in my workouts, and I do them throughout the day
as needed with bodyweight only if I feel the need.

Thanks, running Linux here so I have to look for Helix Player I guess,
(but I'm about to upgrade to Mandriva 2008 so I'll pass on that for the
time being)

Is this form OK ?

Google

real player for linux

and you'll find one from Real and alternatives as well.

Absolutely. Steve is an incredible athlete (was twice American champion
in his martial arts discipline and took 3rd at the World's one of those
years as well), and that's a very good windmill tutorial.

You don't need this particular player. You'll probably need RealPlayer
installed, because you'll need Real codecs, but after that plenty of
players should work.

Yup, I know where to get it (Helix Player or Windows Codecs) but I'm
rebuilding my system any day now so it was easier to look for something I
can play right away Smile

Real Player is based on the Helix source I think..

Oh sorry, I get what you meant, "just install the codecs" Smile
Will do, but I'll probably get them from Helix when I get around to it

One more thing you can do although I don't know how many will have the
flexibility: Sit on the ground. Turn both legs the same way, e.g.,
both feet to the right. You're still sitting up, but outside of your
left leg and the inside of your right leg are on the ground. Open the
legs 90 degrees, more if you're able, and bring your head to the inside
of your left knee while keeping your left cheek on the ground. The
inside of the right knee should also remain on the ground. Repeat for
the other side.

This is sort of like touching your head to your knees but instead of
stretching the back of your legs, hips, and back, you're focusing on the
outside of the hip/glute area. If anyone finds a picture or video of
this, let me know, otherwise I can try to take one and post it. It's
_very_ effective, requires no weights, and there's essentially zero
possibility of cheating.
