I was reading through the "Muscle & Fitness" magazine and while being
programmed to never be satisfied with my current LBM I stumbled upon
the "Chew The Fat" news bit from Tabitha Elliot, Ph D.
It says that when carbs are restricted (not an unjustified
hypercaloric diet) saturated fats have been shown not to raise LDL
cholesterol levels. And that when women are on low-fat diets,
increasing saturated fat intake can actually reduce the progression of
atherosclerosis. Not only that, but it goes on to say that:
"Replacing carbohydrates with any type of fat results in decreased
triglycerides and increased HDL ('good') cholesterol, with the
beneficial effect on HDL cholesterol actually being greater for
saturated fat compared to unsaturated fat."
It looks like a solid piece of news. I know that there is fluff and
drug pushing in these mainstream fitness magazines, but there are
valuable nuggets in there. I actually don't mind reading through
"Men's Fitness" or "Musclle & Fitness". Of course, Mary Enig and Sally
Fallon precede these mainstream magazines by quite a few years but it
is reassuring to see this information coming out for the masses.
I've felt noticeably better, emotionally and mentally, when I increase
my saturated fat intake. I see the 30% of fats as saturated for total
dietary intake as more of a minimum than a cautionary maximum.
Discussion? Debate? Maybe this is old news, I haven't loaded new
messages since 2/17/06...
