Hello all,
I am putting together a home gym in my garage. I haven't worked out in almost
5 years, and I am fat and out of shape. Instead of accepting this as "part of
getting older" (I just turned 40) I have decided to get off my ass and correct
the situation. I used to work out quite a bit at one of my local gyms so I
remember a lot of the workouts I used to do. So far I have decided to get a
power rack with lat pulldown, olymic weight set, bench, and some dumbells. I
bought a bike about 3 weeks ago and am alternating between biking one day and
jogging the next. Also I found some encouraging information on the web about
getting back into shape after 40 and am hell-bent on acheiving my goals.
Does anyone have anything more to add to my initial equipment list? Can anyone
recomend a retailer with whom you have personally had a good and viable
exerience? Can anyone recomend any particular brands? What about
suppliments? I went to GNC the other day and walked out just because there were
TOO many options and I didn't feel informed enough to make an acceptably
intelligent decision. My goals are to loose weight, build up my body overall,
make this gut of mine disappear (any advice on that?), and some how grow an
ass (it is flat from sitting at a computer 10 hours a day!) . OMG, if you told
me when I was 20 that I would look like this in 20 years, I would have lost my
will to live! LOL!
Anyway, l look forward to some input on these points. Seems like this group is
pretty well informed.

Oshman's is pretty good and very affordable.
Also, start raiding the local garage sales early in the morning
if you are looking to save money.

Might subtract the lat pulldown (if you can chin) and dumbbells. Might add a
barbell pad for barbell crunches and, until your traps thicken, squats. Might
add a shrug bar, they're cool.

www.ironmind.com and www.fractionalplates.com are pricey but very, very nice.
www.yorkbarbell.com is less pricey and excellent.

I very strongly prefer food. After a five-year layoff you'll get beginner gains
for at least a couple of months, no reason for supplements for quite a while if
ever.

Deep heavy full squats twice a week.

That's pretty much what I got. Power cage (for safety), bench
(inclines), plate tree, and a pair of oly dumbell *handles*, all from
newyorkbarbells.com. Then got a 300lb olympic bar set at the local
mall (shipping plates is *expensive*).

The only real "supplements" you should look at are (1) fish oil pills
(I get mine a the local wharehouse store) and (2) protein (I use ON's
"Any Whey" in cooking, else canned chicken). For everything else, you
should be eating *less* food, not looking to buy *more*. >> Stay informed about: REQ Recomendations For Home Gym Equipment and Retailers |
