Hey guys,

I'm consuming at least 230grams of whey protein daily now. I'm pumping
iron short of injury too. Before this, I was downing weight gainer
daily but the protein was only ~100 grams per day. But now, I'm out of
the weightgainer and all I have left is protein powder.

Also, I have learned to drink milk. I got the Lactaid kind, and it's
been easy and no problem. In order to gain more weight, should I go
back to the weight gainer or stay with the protein powder? By the way,
I've reached 160 pounds, but am still not 9% body fat.

Okay, I'm going. Need to pump iron now.

Fwiw and iirc, there was a bodybuilder named C.F. Smith back in the
day, an MD, too, again iirc, who offered that calories are calories.
That your body makes no distinction between a Coke-Twinkie snack as
compared to a salad and steak.

This guy was a beast, too. If you've read early issues of MMI then
you've seen him.

More importantly, you've seen his friends. ;o)

And DZ joins the fray battling it out for November's humor award!

The field up to this point (unofficially, of course, as I believe I'm
still under suspension by the humor/humoUr committee) includes
Kromagnon and David. Observe:

Kromagnon re French Vanilla Crème - http://tinyurl.com/yc4d7b - and
its 24 g of protein/serving:

"Try this flavor with 8 oz. of orange juice; it will knock your socks
off. Either wear shoes or take your socks off to avoid this problem.
Smile"

And David with his contribution of 82 billion (plus or minus) creatine
links.

Best of luck in the competition, DZ.

Past recipients:

August 2006: Cohen
September 2006: Pete
October 2006: Dally and The Queen of Cans and Jars

And it looks like the erstwhile Dally received a nod back in January
2006 as well.

Oh, I missed that he's cutting. I guess, that the moment I read he's
160 lbs I automatically assumed that he tries to *gain* weight,
especially that he wrote about weight gainers.

So do not eat junk food then (and weight gainers too). I'm serious.

Hi Shute,

I'm trying to gain. Originally the goal was to reach 160, but now I'm
there. Actually I teeter between 159 and 160. Yeah, it's 8 scoops
throughout the day of protein, and 10 ounces of milk. So it's 4 scoops
in the morning, and 4 scoops at night. And throughout the day, I eat
Healthy Choice meals so I can easily count calories and other
macronutrients.

The 9% bf would be nice, but presently, I'm between 13% and 19%. I
don't mind it so much.

Yes, I'm pretty much a walking tapeworm. The weight gainer actually
worked to get me to 160, but now I'm out. I need to buy more, and all I
have left is protein powder. My protein intake doubled only a couple of
days ago.

When I was downing the weight gainer, I was reaching 3200 calories in a
day. With the protein, it's hard to break 2500 calories. Yesterday,
although my protein was 230 grams, I consumed only 2100 calories. Not good.

SEAL,

You are going to have to look at more than just your straight protein
intake if you are trying to gain weight. There is much more than that.
For your weight, 230 g of protein powder is more than you need. You
need to get some more from your diet. You also need to increase your
intake of good healthy carbs and EFAs (essential fatty acids).
Dropping your calorie intake is going to make it impossible to gain
weight no matter how many grams of protein you are consuming.

Go to www.peakperformance-training.com and read the article on there
called "Packing on the Mass". It gives some good tips and part 2 is
going to be posted very soon. There is also a newsletter I would
recommend signing up for because it gives alot of nutrtion and workout
tips that are relevant to what you are looking for.

Stay Strong,

Caleb

If you're actually several people, that's great. For one person of your
size, it's too much.

Pumping iron is good. Not getting injured is also good.

Is there a reason you cannot buy more of the food you want to eat? In
some parts of the world, there certainly is, but you don't sound like
you're living in one of them.

> Also, I have learned to drink milk. I got the Lactaid kind, and it's

OK.

> In order to gain more weight, should I go

It sounds like your goal was to gain weight and muscle, up to 160
pounds, but also to lose bodyfat. Since you've reached something of a
goal weight, this would be a good time to start eating less, keep
lifting, and see if you can now drop some bodyweight with the goal of
reducing bodyfat while maintaining as much muscle as possible. The
classic strategy is alternating cycles of bulking, which you've just
done, and cutting, which I recommend you now do. I don't know what your
starting weight was - if it was close to your current weight, e.g., if
you started at 150, then you might keep bulking for a while longer.
OTOH, if you started at 130 and you're up to 160, it's a fine time to
drop a little fat and see where you end up in terms of overall
bodyweight and composition.

> Okay, I'm going. Need to pump iron now.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

How about reducing your total protein, including both food and
supplements, to somewhere between 70 and 140 grams per day? You really
don't need more than that - the numbers I gave are roughly 1 gram per
kilo of bodyweight and 1 gram per pound of bodyweight. Reducing your
protein will also reduce your calories some, good if you're cutting.

Good luck to you.

Junk food in combination with protein shakes and multi vit/min supplements

Oh, heck, I think you get shortlisted for your reaction to not being
