Hi,

I am a beginner at weight training only started 6 months ago. I weight
about 72KG and i am in my early twenties. I take my normal meals three
times a day. I just started taking protein to boost my training in the
gym. I go to the gym for about 2 hours 3 times a week. I started with
only driking 2 scoop of Whey Protein only on the day I train. But I was
told to drink it twice a day for 6 days a week and also take 6 amino
acids 1000mg tablets everyday. With all that protein and my normal
meals. Is it going to be harmful for my kidney? If you need anymore
information please ask and advice will be welcomed.

Thanks
Vincent

1 6 oz can of tuna packed in water has roughly 32 grams of protein and
costs around 50 cents, so what exactly is the problem with erring on
the side of having 'too much protien'?. I'm curious if you spend this
much brain power thinking about your next session of squats...In short
just lift the weight.

Rule of thumb is 1g protein / lb of lean bodyweight every day (whether you
train or not). That won't hurt your kidneys, assuming you're healthy. Your
whey protein powder counts towards that total. So estimate how much you're
getting in the rest of your eating and make up for it with the whey.

4 scoops a day is probably more than you need.

The amino acids tablets count too, but not differently.

I thought it was per kg. If it is lb. of LBM, shouldn't it be oz. of
protein?

I heard what you heard.

Let's differentiate between maintaining size and gaining size. If
you're trying to stay the same, 1 gr per kg seems to be sufficient. If
you're trying to get bigger, it makes sense to both get more calories
per day into your body and to be sure some of those additional calories
are also protein, e.g., if you're eating 500 calories per day surplus in
order to gain weight, and half those calories come from protein, that's
an extra ~60 grams of protein if I did the math right..

No, cuz protein's always measured in grams, whereas people are measured in
pounds in civilized parts of the world. You'll have to do the conversion
yourself if you insist on weighing yourself in kg.

There's different ratios depending on what you're up to and who you
believe. I gave you the MFW-standard ratio for weightlifters.

So I should be taking 185 grams of protein a day? That seems a bit high. But
if it were 1 g per kg of LBM, then I'd be taking 84 g a day, which seems
more realistic. But, if I am wrong, please correct me.

Didn't follow all the links, but Will's says "1.7 - 1.8 grams of
protein/kilogram of body mass per day for strength exercisers." 1g/lb is a
convenient shorthand. Also not it's really 1g/lb of *lean* bodyweight, not
total bodyweight.

err, I'll agree that 1g/lb is a rough shorthand, but I think it way
overestimates what its needed. For me, the difference between 1.7g/kg of LBM
and 1g/lb of LBM is 42.2 g of protein. If that much protein doesn't give you
the shits....

I found another site that states, "...the group that ingested 2.4 grams of
protein did not see any more increased protein synthesis than the 1.4 grams
of protein group." This came from http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/maki1.htm

Again, I could be wrong, and I would like to find out how much protein I
need to get the best results. If I need 185 g/day, then that's what I'll
take.

So you ignored the rest of Will's article and are using a study showing
you don't need to eat almost double the amount of protein anybody's
suggested to prove you don't need to eat much less?

Whatever. Have fun. Work on reading comprehension.

Hugh

Now, now. No need to get pissy. It just struck me odd to use two different
factors. But if the norm is 1g/lb, then so be it. I am just trying to get
the right information.

I think protein has 4 calories per g.
